Southwest Rapid Rewards - SWRR Chase Visa question

Hi,
I'm new here, and new to churning as well. I'm curious - I applied for the SWRR Chase visa card about a year ago. I'm coming up on my anniversary. If I cancel the card, do I get to keep the miles? Or do the miles go away? If I get to keep the miles, can I re-apply for another SWRR Preferred visa and get another promotional deal on miles (and add to my already 40k miles)?
Thanks - just trying to figure this out!

Welcome to FlyerTalk!
I think the preferred answer is apply for the Preferred Business Card, but wait for the 50K deal to roll around. Once you have the card approved, cancel the other.
If you are concerned about the annual fee, the preferred annual fee bonus covers the cost. So with the Preferred Business Card, timing the churn is not such and issue. There is also some questions if the new system will permit churning as often as the old system. That is the beauty of the business card. If you have never had it, it is not a churn. If you have a lot of cards or have a lower credit score, you may not be approved. There may be a higher requirement for the Business card.

Hi,
Thanks a lot. So if I cancel my current SWRR visa, I won't lose my miles? Sorry I'm kind've new to this.
I'm actually looking to get the preferred business card anyway because I noticed it did basically cover the entire annual fee.
Is there another thread where people are talking about this new system? I've not heard of a new system coming to fruition?
Thanks for answering all my questions :-)

As long as you fulfilled the purchase requirements to get the miles they are yours. If it was on your contract that you had to keep the card at least one year (never heard of it but anything is possible) they probably would not yank the points but would require payment of the annual fee as stipulation for early cancellation.

Because you are close to the anniversary date, be aware:
Prior to RR 2.0 the first anniversary bonus was effectively a "deferred signup bonus." The anniversary bonus would post on the last day of the 12th statement period, and the annual fee would be billed on the first day of the 13th period. Because you have 30 days from the billing of the annual fee to cancel with no obligation you had 30 days within which to cancel, avoid the second year fee, and keep the anniversary bonus.
It's a bit trickier now, as it seems the anniversary bonus doesn't post until the 13th statement. If you cancel before a closing date, you earn no points when that statement closes (at least under the old system). I don't know, however, whether the fee still posts on the first day of the cycle...and even if it does whether the 30 day period starts then or when the statement closes. So if it is still possible to obtain the anniversary bonus while avoiding the second year annual fee, it might require ultra-precise timing to fit a tiny window. This is unconfirmed conjecture, however. Perhaps someone who has had one of the post-transition RR Visas for more than a year can clarify some things for us.
As far as the original concern, closing an RR Visa anytime after the first six statements should carry zero risk of loss of the signup bonus.
