I have an all day layover in LHR and was wondering how this spot is for lunch? Are the prices reasonable? I have read articles that say this is one of the best markets in the world. Thanks

A simple "Borough Market" search yields multiple related threads, including this one http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/u-k-ireland/1340907-borough-market-vs-covent-garden.html jerry a. laska Jul 1, 12, 6:24 pm And this thread may be helpful: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/u-k-ireland/1295517-borough-market-london.html?highlight=drinks Raffles Jul 1, 12, 11:47 pm It is 80% 'real' market and 20% take-away food, note. Unless raw meat and raw veg are your idea of lunch! stut Jul 2, 12, 2:14 am The raw meat is good (albeit definitely at London prices) but it is IMO no longer the place to go for good fruit & veg. The focus has definitely shifted towards deli-type offerings - nothing wrong with that - and it still has a fantastic atmosphere, but there do seem to be a number of places that are now much more of the "urban farmers market" mould (i.e. sell supermarket rejects at huge markups - again, nothing wrong with the former, I wish more places would!) For me, though, a visit to Neals Yard Dairy, a choice between a raclette and a Brindisa chorizo sandwich, and a Monmouth coffee, makes the trip worth it in their own. ajax Jul 2, 12, 1:51 pm The raw meat is good (albeit definitely at London prices) but it is IMO no longer the place to go for good fruit & veg. I concur. Nowadays at the weekend it seems to be full of Italian tourists and their mothers, and ex-pat Americans who've just finished with a run and are pushing a pram whilst looking disgustingly fit. JohnnyP Jul 2, 12, 2:38 pm A lot of the higher end vendors have apparently left Borough Market after falling out with management and headed to Maltby Street Market. Haven't had a chance to head there myself yet, but plan to during my next excursion in the area! http://www.maltbystreet.com/ I actually heard about it at an event a few weeks ago where one of the vendors, Hansen & Lydersen, had a stall. They serve probably the best smoked salmon I've ever had! http://hansen-lydersen.com/ Swanhunter Jul 3, 12, 3:35 am A lot of the higher end vendors have apparently left Borough Market after falling out with management and headed to Maltby Street Market. Do pop in for a coffee when passing as I live a minute away .;) The Ham & Cheese Company is especially good, amazing mozarella and some excellent, interesting Italian hams. Hansen & Lydersen are utterly fabulous. ^^ Borough is worth a visit - and goodish to eat at - but I rarely actually buy anything there. Probably the most interesting place to dine is Elliotts cafe. |
