I thought I might do some advance Christmas shopping on our upcoming trip to Quebec, and wondered where I should go for quality maple syrup? Any farms within a few hours of the city?

Check out Atwater (http://bit.ly/N6ag3F) and Jean-Talon (http://bit.ly/N3EkJp) markets. They should have several Quebec maple farmers selling syrup, candy, and other maple products. Both markets make wonderful places to explore, to have lunch, or just enjoy some coffee or fresh fruit juice. Hope you have fun! luchoqc Jul 2, 12, 8:36 pm Check out Atwater (http://bit.ly/N6ag3F) and Jean-Talon (http://bit.ly/N3EkJp) markets. In fact, they're open only a few weeks every year, between March and April. Jean Talon market is a great option within the city. I highly recommend "Marché des saveurs" boutique and "Les sucreries de l'érable" shopsI wasn't expecting to see them tapping the trees! :p The past few years we've been in Vermont during the summer and many syrup farms have a roadside stand selling their products; that's what I was looking for. Will check out the Atwater Market. I've rented a flat about 10 minutes walk from there. airoli Jul 5, 12, 11:41 am All my maple syrup comes from "Les frères Marois" at Atwater market. Good quality, good price, any size and color you like. I have barely ever seen any roadside stalls selling the product in QC, and none outside of the tapping season. B1 Jul 6, 12, 1:41 pm On this topic, if you read "Oh Canada Oh Quebec" by Mordecai Richler, you will be amused by the story of the people in the Eastern Townships who peddle motor oil in maple syrup bottles along the road. Whether or not it's true, it does give a good reason to buy it from a store. In Toronto, you can go to the Harbord Bakery and buy the stuff from Norman Jewison's farm. My favorite spot is the Mapledale Cheese Factory in Plainfield Ontario on highway 35 near Belleville where they have a nice collection from local growers - and great cheese. |
