Mrs999 and I were booked on 946 today (Monday the 2nd), connecting at ARN for HEL. Found an email in the inbox this morning informing us that our flight is cancelled and that we would be re-routed on LH through DUS. No big deal -- leave an hour later and arrive at HEL two hours later.

cheers,

Henry

My other half finally made it home 12 hours after intended. Rerouted via London. SAS handled rebooking quickly for EBG and C customers it seems. Others not so lucky were still at ORD when EBG arrived back in Stockholm.

Info provided at ORD suggested the AC was hit by lightning as it landed, and there was damage to the landing gear.

Looks like there were also some A/C issues before the inbound flight's departure:

The lack of communications from the airlines is horrifying.

When I was checking my itinerary via United.com at around 11pm on 7/1, it said there was a change to the itinerary, and I should call United to get my tickets reissued. I call United, and they immediately say to call SAS. So, I call the SAS office in Sydney. He sees nothing out of ordinary with the itinerary (still booked for SK946), and he also mentions it's oversold by 50 in Y.

(In hindsight, I just checked my Expedia e-mails, and I did receive an e-mail at 1:50am indicating we had been rebooked onto another flight. But...)

We get to DEN, and UA checks us in with no issues, nor was there any indication that SK946 was cancelled. I started getting a bad feeling when we arrived at ORD and the check-in desk was completely empty two hours prior to departure. The TA said we had been rebooked (and confirmed) on KL612 to AMS (the on to ARN via SK 556). We go over to KL's desk, and they said we are simply on their standby list!

We also met some friends in DEN who were also booked on SK946, and we didn't see them at all at ORD. That leads me to believe they actually got the information in DEN and were rebooked elsewhere; and they were checking in two kiosks away!

Mrs. Swede goes back to the SK desk, who confirms us on a flight to LHR in case we don't get on the KL flight. As luck would have it, we got the last four seats on the KL plane.

We arrived in ARN about 5.5 hours later than scheduled...and without our bags (which was actually nice since we didn't need to schlep the additional 60kg around T-Centralen). We had a relaxing lunch at SkyCity, then took two SJ trains to Mrs. Swede's hometown.

I will also say we've been pretty lucky. In the 17 years we've been traveling to/from Sweden (the last 7 years with kids in tow), this was the first actual irregularity we've experienced (besides volunteering to be bumped).

Is there any way to get mileage credit for the SK946 flight that did not happen?

Absolutely!
http://www.flysas.com/en/fi/EuroBonus/Earn-points/airlines/SAS-Group/SAS/

It says:
Points for cancelled flights
If you are involuntarily re-accommodated from SAS to another airline or other means of transport, you may request your points for your original flight itinerary

So just contact EB (call them, don't do any retro stuff if you want your miles this year...) and claim your points!

Potential problem: I want these points to go onto our UA accounts (haven't had an EB account in almost 9 years). Will that be an issue?

Then it is an UA issue and you need to contact UA. Good luck!

With SKs mini longhaul fleet, any loss of capacity is disastrous...:(

A pain to the passengers , but this must also cost SAS a fortune in expenses and lost revenue.

In order to file a claim with my travel insurance (for having to buy new train tickets since we missed our originally scheduled one), they said I needed to get a statement from SAS saying the flight was cancelled and we were booked on another set of flights which arrived at a time after our original train departure.

How in the world could I get one?

If anything, I could print out the whole itinerary from checkmytrip.com which shows my original and new itinerary...

Easy, contact SAS, and they will provide you with the info. You need to tell them that you need a paper saying that the flight was cancelled and you have been rerouted.

I think contacting SAS customer service will do. They also have online chat, so you might be able to start from there.

Is service back to normal on the ORD/EWR routes? Of course, I'm not flying ARN-EWR for another two weeks, so anything can happen...
