It's my wife's birthday in the second half of August, and she'd like three or four days with a private swimming pool. We live in NYC. We're thinking of renting a house in St. Thomas. Good idea? How much should we worry about unfortunate weather possibilities?
What's your own feeling?
If you are apt to be fretting and worrying every time a tropical disturbance forms somewhere in the Atllantic for the two weeks prior to your trip, it may not be worth it.
However, if you are fairly relaxed knowing the odds are probably on your side and you won't worry too much, then go for it.
I guess it's your own tolerance of weather unknowns that cannot be controlled that really counts.
At that time hurricanes don't bother me, just annoying storms.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. You can still get major storms on either side of those dates. There is no way to know if a storm will hit during a specific time.
While a hurricane may not form you could be in for 4 days of rain or even 4 days of bright sun. Prices are cheaper during the summer because of the weather. You just have to decide if it's worth the chance.

I understand your concerns very well. I myself was born and raised in the Caribbean and have had my share of hurricanes, tropical storms, etc. At worst, the airport will be shut down, you probably will not be able to leave the island for at least 24hrs until the weather clears. You might loose power, and some of the roads might be closed due to debris or water. However, remember, people have lived through this scenario every single year during hurricane season, and they continue to stay. It is no different than a bad snowstorm, tornado, or high wind advisory that you get on the states. Din't NYC got hit with some really bad snow the past couple of years? What happened afterwards?
I know there are some inconvenience that are caused to weather, but there is no way of knowing or predicting what can happen and when it will happen. Maybe look into travelers insurance and see what it covers, in case you are concerned on this, myself, do not worry, tomorrow is another day, make the best out of it.

Peak time for hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin is on or about September 11th.
From travel.state.gov ;
The Atlantic Basin, including the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico: Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends November 30. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center expects to see a near-normal hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin this year with a 70 percent chance of nine to fifteen named storms, including four to eight that will reach hurricane strength (with top winds of 74 mph or higher). Of those, one to three will become major hurricanes (with top winds of 111 mph or higher, ranking Category 3, 4, or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale).
IMHO,you are rolling the dice;)
