Qantas today launched the first phase of its new advertising campaign, ‘You’re The Reason We Fly’, adjusting its position to focus more on the Australian people.
The campaign will see the airline change its tag line from the ‘Spirit of Australia’ to the ‘Spirit of Australians’ and encourage the public to get involved by inviting them to have their photo featured in a TVC or their name printed on a plane.

That's a fine slogan, for Bundaberg Rum!
For Qantas, not so much. The old slogan was fine as long as you don't think about it too much. The new one just sounds weird. Australians praising Australia is great, Australians praising Australians just sounds weird and jingoistic, like we're at a Pauline Hanson meeting.

I liked the old "Spirit of Australia" ads and jingle from the '80's - maybe that can make a reappearance as well! :)

the QF website seems to be down, and has been for a while. If you do manage to get through it spits out rubbish like 'there are no award seats available between Sydney and Melbourne for the 30 day period from 9 November'.
I wish they'd spend a little more time on the stuff that matters (like being able to book) than on promos.
'a working website' - that'd be the reason I'd fly Qantas:rolleyes:

Seems it was a world-wide Amadeus collaspe. Not much QF could have done. Affected many other airlines.
We can be so quick to judge.
The system, called Amadeus, is experiencing outages worldwide, rumoured on internet forums to be due to a global time clock adjustment for a leap second that has gone wrong.

a message on the landing page alerting to the problem would have sufficed. the check-in problems were reported to be fixed before midday. i was still having problems well after that time, so maybe not too quick to judge :)

They still have website problems. An Amadeus collapse might not be so easy to overcome.
And I got a message: The booking system is having problems at the moment.

The QF campaign website is here: https://www.qantasyou.com/#home.
The YouTube video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-2BlaVxSKE.
And if QF really thinks that its mission is to be "the airline of Australians, by Australians, for Australians", it might as well pack up and go home. That's a small market compared to the markets which its competitors aim to serve.

do they really say 'by australians'? guess that means they're committed to keeping everything on shore, and only employing Australian crew then!! That's fantastic news!!
But i feel sad at the same time for the Birtish and new zealand crew who are going to be out of work :(
oh, wait, i just watched the you tube... they don't actually say by australians in it!! :)
just the spirit, or ghost...
My last 3 months of Qantas travelling in J have been the best ever. I travel on points in Australia and they don't make you feel second class with flight redemptions for domestic travel. The fact that we can do JASAs has been great for us.
Yeah I noticed on their website "Spirit of AustraliaNS" ... WHAT THE!!!:confused::confused:
Wonder how many millions of $$$ were given to some wizzbang Marketing / PR company to come up with that ingenious slogan???

Peter Allen might be rolling in his grave but instead why not bring back the old Australian Airlines the way we do the things we do theme song. It's a modified version of a MoTOWN Hit dating back to the sizties.Even Hungry Jacks used it for a while too.

Just got this in my email
See the making of the new Qantas campaign with Daniel Johns
Over the past three weeks, thousands of Australians have shared their names for their chance to feature on the side of two of our planes and submitted photographs to be a part of our new advertising campaign. These names will be a constant reminder of what matters most, you. With more than 64,000 responses, we're excited to reveal the next phase of the campaign where you'll see some of these Australians.
It's our pleasure to share with you the making of the new soundtrack that will feature in our new advertising campaign on Sunday 22 July. Iconic Australian musician Daniel Johns has written, arranged and performed a new piece of music, titled 'Atlas' for Qantas in celebration of the new Spirit of Australians.

Epic???
Dull as dust...
That new "piece" almost put me to sleep..... IMO, there was nothing wrong with the Peter Allen classic (and its tweaked version introduced a couple of years ago)...
And I wish in this day and age of social media proliferation, Qantas would think twice before heading to twitter with a "tale of two letters" campaign.... there were more than a few "QANTARSE - tale of two letters" tweets floating around....

64000 responses out of how many million members? And all you had to do was click on a button right?
While QF may think it is all about us, doesn't seem all of us think about QF...

Spirit of Australia = GREAT!
Spirit of Australia when on board - for both Aussies and Visitors who fly the Red Kangaroo!!!!
Spirit of Australians = ...?
Seriously. How does that make foreigners feel when they get aboard a QF jet?
That's the first thing that came to mind for me - being an emigrant in Australia....

well - I just saw the advertisement tonight. It fails.
Whole bunch of people looking at an odd angle into the sky. At first you think they could be looking at a plane in the sky, but from the height of the shot it looks like they are looking at a window cleaner, or a camera guy (or gal) in a cherry picker.
The music - nothing at all memorable - no catchy jingle, no hum-along tune. Think of CX (robbie williams), SQ (singapore girl, great way to fly), BA (Flower duet) - all have music you can recall. QF's... nothing.
This would have been extensively focus group tested...normally those groups exclude marketing and PR professionals. Maybe they should have included some of those in the test groups!
how good an airline ad can really be! (BA goose-bump material... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yxbgm9Bmkzw&feature=fvwrel)

I've never actually felt the need to "Dislike" a video on YouTube. Until now.

that's the one!
197 'likes' and '101' dislikes. (66/33%)
Compare that to the BA video which had a single 'dislike' vote.
why would QF marketing run with a campaign that 33 per cent of people dislike?
