Other Car Rental Programs (ie. Alamo, Enterprise) - Prices skyrocketed a month out?

I had checked on rates for rental car aug 1-aug 11 in Denver back on May 22. Found something close to $300 for an intermediate SUV. Today I go and do the same search and I'm finding COMPACT cars are going for over $900!
What happened? Do you have to book rental cars much further out than I thought?

Keep checking. Several months ago, we had an Alamo reservation for Denver. We kept checking rates on Costco Travel as the time got closer and ended up with a compact for 4 days for $32 TOTAL for the 4 days including taxes, etc. YMMV
Even without Costco, rates can change from day to day.

Been noticing the same in LAX.
Have an economy car booked at $350 odd, and now showing $1400 for same period in Sept 2012. Went to $600 a week after I booked (Last week in June) and climbing.
Is this a sign of reduced competition? Or is it just a cyclical thing?

Noticed the same thing with LAX. I booked a standard SUV for the first week in October back in late May/early June, and got it for a little over $300. I looked two nights ago and the same reservation is now pushing $600. I was looking to possibly book a convertible instead since it seems the fourth member of our party is bailing now, so a SUV isn't needed anymore. But the rates are skyhigh, even using the KLM code.
