Hilton HHonors - On-line check in and upgrades

I have never used the on line check in at a Hilton, so excuse me if I ask a newbie question.

I am Gold, which gives me at least a shot at an upgraded room. If I check in on line, and select my room, does that negate my chances of an upgrade?

I only OLCI when I see a room upgrade as an option. Whenever I select an upgraded room @ OLCI I always get it (90% automatically, 10% I have to ask and show the printout). The OLCI also changes the room category in your reservation if you select a better room (print out is a good idea). I would not OLCI, if you are not seeing upgraded rooms. Also check back several times before the actual check-in, because options change regularly.

I've never used the online checkin option when offered, just for the reason you surmised....that you may be missing an upgrade opportunity at checkin. Unless you're very familiar with the layout of the room options/locations of the property, I'd say don't use the online checkin.

Rather, I always put the following in the comments box when booking online: "GST RQST UPGRD PER HHONORS GOLD". That, along with my bed/smoking choices etc. already in my profile, has usually resulted in an upgrade if available, as the hotel can assign you the better room in advance of your arrival. And a polite "were you able to upgrade me?" when I get to the front desk, has often gotten the affirmative answer. Of course, YMMV.

Tried GST RQST UPGRD PER HHONORS GOLD at T-20 hrs, but got the msg that you cannot request stuff within 24 hrs of check in. Good to know for future. Tonight I tried to OLCI but the rooms offered were low floors, all near the elevators and ice machine. Decided to cancel OLCI and try my luck at the desk, tho we'll be arriving after 10PM.
