Other Asian, Australian and South Pacific Frequent Flyer Programs - Eva Airways booking with credit card

Am booking a flight for a friend using my credit card. Eva Airways website states credit card must be shown at check in and credit card user must be one of the pax. Alternative is going to an Eva Airways ticket office and signing a form authorizing the use of the cc, there is no Eva Airways ticket office in Vancouver BC. Has anyone who has booked a flight for other than themselves ever been asked to produce the card at check-in?

Unless this is a HOT-E-FARE, maybe you can get around it by using Expedia, Orbitz etc. My 2nd thought is using a travel agent. 3rd is loading up a Amex or MC Money Card. Good luck. wj

Have used a travel agent for this booking instead of doing it on their web site so I guess there should be no problem. I am sure that many people book flights where a husband and wife may have only one credit card and it's the person travelling that does not have it in his/her name.

They are strict with 1st party card checks, would seam like an obvious gap on their part if they let 3rd parties slip by.

At a minimum, I would give the pax a photocopy of the card along with credentials.

The one time I got caught on this, they did work with me to call Amex and verify it. So you might also have the pax arrive 30 minutes early just in case.

EDIT: Going through either a travel agent or Expedia (or such) will certainly work. I would expect a TA to be nominaly higher and the online services to be much higher (they NEVER see the cheap EVA inventory).

EDIT2: browser refresh issue. Missed that the OP whent through a TA, so there is certainly no issue. The TA guarantees the payment to EVA.

Thanks for your reply, yes that's what the TA told me, in fact the TA went through one of his consolidators and it ended up being a published Eva Airway fare anyway. He also said that Eva's requirement is no different than any airline, as any airline can ask to see the credit card a ticket was purchased with. According to the TA, they rarely ask unless something looks out of line/suspicious.

My experience of EVA is that they ALWAYS ask to see the CC if you book on their site. Only once have they forgotten - that was a TPE-BKK-LHR flight. A message was sent through to BKK where I was asked at the gate. They told me that TPE was very worried!

Another time, I lost the CC concerned, I phoned ahead. They asked me to produce a letter from my CC promising that the transaction would be honoured. I knew this just wasn't going to happen - if nothing else because I was 3 days away from my flight in TPE and the card was issued in the UK. I did have the statement with me showing the transaction going through - they accepted this.

I find it slightly annoying that I've flown with EVA for almost 20 years, am a Diamond card holder and they still go through this little procedure. But that's the mentality of bean counters, and EVA are not alone in the region. You are the mere pax and you shall obey!

I also find it strange that the rule is that you might have to purchase a new full price ticket at the airport if you can't produce the card. If they are worried about the payment, then surely they can just re-charge you the original amount for your existing ticket.

As noted above, you are not asked if you buy via a TA. Also, you are not asked if you buy from an EVA office directly.

It seems to me that if you buy a ticket on their website and it is for a flight 3 or 4 months in the future, they would have received payment from the credit card company long before you actually fly. Seems like an antiquated method they use. I saw the same llinstructions on the TG web site have the credit card with you or else.

I have done this several times for family members. All you have to do is scan a copy of your credit card with your ID on the same page and write a short letter detailing that you have given your friend the ability to use your card for their booking. Sign the paper and let your friend use it in the airport.

The issue is that the CCs have some (arguable strange/bogus) rules that in fraud situations there is a differnce between "card presented" and "card not presented". So by seeing the CC the airline reduces their liability.

Maybe they (BR and others) are being somewhat anal in taking it to the extreme, but they do and us pax must expect it.

No issue for you though, BR was paid by the TA, not by your CC. So they could care less if your CC was good.

In 4 years of flying EVA, I have always been obliged to provide my CC.
I find it annoying, but I understand why they do it. I present it at checkin without being asked. I'm just happy that they started accepting AMEX in the last 2 years.

One time I did not have the CC I used to purchase the ticket, and I was forced to purchase another ticket and later get a refund on the original ticket. This was at LAX.

Did you have to pay full fare (which is nasty IMHO)? Or did you have to pay the original price so weren't out of pocket?

This is odd. I dont use EVA very often and have only flown with them to KUL and BKK about 5 or 6 times over the last 18 months. I dont recall ever showing them my credit card

I doubt it... and just to confirm, you are buying via the EVA website? (not an agent..)

At least in the US there are very significant differences between a CC and DC in this situation. It actually would make sense for EVA to not care about a DC transaction, because they have recieved payment and not at fault for fraud.

I will certainly back Jimbo in that they do check CCs. One time they even ran me down at the gate becuase the TA forgot to check my CC (I think in BKK).

EVA's competitor in Taiwan, China Airlines, used to have identical practices in demanding the showing of the credit card at check-in, for the same reason of worrying the credit card charges would not be honoured. However, this has all been eliminated after China Airlines subscribe to credit card chages through Pay-Pal. I personally find it very convenient. May be EVA should take the same approach.

When I have purchased on line directly from BR, I have also had to show my CC every single time flying out of SFO/LAX/YVR. The exception for me has been certain agents in SEA who know me and know my flying patterns. :D
