Checkpoints and Borders Policy Debate - Name Match Lufthansa Airlines

I know the topic of name matches on airline tickets has been discussed her extensively, but here's a slight variation. Bought my son a ticket on Lufthansa for a trip next month using his exact name as printed on his prior passort which included a "Jr" in the surname. Since then, I replaced his passport since it was nearing expiration. The new passport does not have "Jr" as part of his surname. I did call Lufthansa to ask about this issue: The agent told me she'd be surprised if this would cause a problem but couldn't guarantee it wouldn't. Does anyone have any prior experience travelling with such suffix variations between the passport and ticket?

I never had a suffix variation problem as you described. However my UA MP account and ticket name did not match my passport name for over twenty years. Briefly my UA MP account was the nickname version of my given name. I never had a problem with this and no one ever raised this as an issue And I traveled plenty as a MP 2MMer.
Two months ago I travelled from BKK to AMS and then CDG to BKK via Lufthansa and this "discrepency" never came up and I had no problem boarding. Not exactly the same as your situation but similar. Since then I got paranoid about it and have changed my MP name to match my passport just in case.
My experience does not mean you won't have a problem with the difference however I never had a problem.
You may have your son also carry his cancelled old passport in case. That way he can show he is the same person It may not be important but it doesn't hurt.
Good luck!

We had several people questioned about this at several borders. No problem ultimately, but a minor annoyance. Because our corporate TA also tracks passport info., we have instituted a policy whereby the exact name in the passport is transported directly into the name field for ticketing, in order to eliminate this.
As others note, easiest is to carry the cancelled passport on the possibility it's ever raised.

I checked with a few people each with a few thousand LH trips, several hundred to/from the US on LH, with a jr or ii as part of their name some time or another and they have never had even the slightest problem with leaving it off or including it.
