Thanks again for useful info regarding taxi from the airport to Ipanema :)
I have another little query. Because of overbooking we could not get a room for our last day in Ipanema. Therefore my options are:
1) Leave our luggage for the day at the hotel. Go sightseeing and in the evening take a taxi to an airport hotel for our noon flight the following day day.
2) Check in at another hotel (Vermont perhaps) in Ipanema/Leblon and take shuttle in the morning for the flight from GIG.
Appreciate any suggestions what we should do.

How early is the flight in the morning. Anything before 9AM, particularly if its International, and I would overnight at a GIG hotel. Just take a cab after your day in Ipanema and settle in for a good nights sleep.

Not too early around 1pm. I thought that might be perhaps the best option, of course I hope by that time that we have seen the major tourist places :)

I'd just stay in Ipanema, then. Some friends stayed at the Vermont last year and said it was alright.
What are the prices involved? The Luxor Hotel at GIG is expensive for the rooms you'd get (we haven't stayed there but did get a tour by asking). It's convenient, but unless it's appreciably cheaper than what you can get elsewhere, I'd stay in town, even in Flamengo or Botafogo (which has some very nice restaurants and shopping and where hotels might be cheaper; also close to the Carmen Miranda Museum, and walks along Guanabara Bay, and you may find less expensive hotels). GIG also has a pousada in its basement, but my wife, who stayed there several years go, described it as extremely basic.

Apperciate all the info.
Our budget is around £100-120 a night.
I thought of using miles for the GIG booking.
The flight is around 1pm.
As earlier comments I will try to maybe book a place in Ipanema maybe Vermont for 1 night or I see again if my hotel has room available for one more night.
Thanks again :)
Reviews seem mixed http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g303506-d311181-Reviews-Vermont_Hotel-Rio_de_Janeiro_State_of_Rio_de_Janeiro.html but generally positive. Not my favorite part of Ipanema (not on the beach, busy/noisy street), but also near sevral restaurants and bars, including the famous Garota do Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema) cafe/bar, where the writers of famous song were reportedly sitting when they saw a pretty girl walk by, inspiring them. It is on main bus routes, though I think you'd need to walk to the beach road if you want the express bus to the airport.
Here are reviews of the Luxor at GIG http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g303506-d305658-Reviews-Luxor_Aeroporto_Hotel-Rio_de_Janeiro_State_of_Rio_de_Janeiro.html BTW, we didn't stay at the hotel but ate lunch in the restaurant, and felt it was better than the selections in the airport food court (not setting the bar high, admittedly).

Thanks again
Ended up extending 1 night at the current hotel we booked. Not the cheapest but fairly convenient. Once moved hotel 3x in Tokyo during a week and that was little bit too much
