I was on Kayak looking for flights between SJC and PHX on Sep 10th. Interestingly the result for US Airways / Multiple Airlines is sold by American Airlines and clicking on the link to the AA website does show the trip as part US Airways and AA but the US Airways flights are not codeshare. Since when have AA started sharing/selling US Airways tickets? Strangley however if you search via the AA website for the same flights they arent shown.

Any IATA member can sell tickets on another carrier. Most of the time you can't do it on that airline's web site, and not every phone agent might be the most experienced at it, but if you wanted to fly to London and then onwards on Kenya Airways, US, AA or just about anyone else should be able to issue a ticket with such a connection. This allows you to get places not served either by the airline or its alliance on a single ticket.

Back when US was on the SABRE reservations system pre-merger, the old web site's schedule lookup tool would try to route you on CX if you put in HKG as a destination for example. I don't think the site could sell that itinerary, but a phone agent would be able to.

Ticket's probably booked as an end on end on AA stock.

I once had a UA ticket booked end on end with a domestic JL connection. Different alliances, same ticket, with UA's 016 number on the JL connections.

Would you be able to check bags all the way thru, or would you need to allow time to re-check luggage when you switched between AA and US?

AA and US have had an interline agreement since, well, forever, and thus, bags would be checked thru to the final destination.

To the OP: this is nothing new. AA itself has long sold tickets on aa.com that involve US, UA, DL, NW and CO along with all of its alliance partners. AA recently revamped the website and because of the changes, more people are noticing it. It has nothing to do with the desperation attempts by Doug Parker to take over AA.
