Hyatt Gold Passport - Hotel closed for next 5 days due to Forest Fire, but I cannot cancel

I've booked Hyatt House CO Springs for the 1st July 2012. Been checking both the City's website and the Hotel's website for any travel waivers due to the deteriorating conditions from the forest fires in Colorado.

This morning I see on Hyatt's Twitter and the Hotel's page that, my arrival date will be impacted. The Hyatt House CO Springs say:

"HYATT house Colorado Springs will be closed for arrivals for the next five days, and for guests with reservations, the hotel will waive all cancellation and rebooking charges and will work with each traveler to make future arrangements. For more information regarding hotel reservations, please call 1-800-993-4751."

When I called the Diamond Line, I was told I cannot cancel because they are scheduled to reopen on 30th June 2012. They tried calling the Hotel Manager, but they are evacuated and cannot respond to the phone. Several issues:

(1) The hotel website does not give a specific date range. It says the next 5 days and the advisories from Hyatt's Twitter and Hotel (to my recollection) was issued today (due to the City's expanding evacuation area).

(2) From a tourist or traveller's standpoint, even if the hotel was reopened, it will not be wise for me to go because most tourist attractions are closed and to help locals/emergency responders/authorities, non essential travel is recommended until everything in the community is officially settled again.

So I asked the agent, that really that I don't want to cancel, rather I want to relocate back to Denver, so I do not impede on local community during such a difficult time for them - the offer was, I can book two places at the same time and cancel Hyatt House CO Springs "if" they allow me to.

(3) Does that mean, if I made two reservations at the lowest rate (which is typically cannot be cancelled) and Hyatt House CO Springs is opened for business on 30th June 2012, then I am stuck with two reservations?

I do not want to go on ranting because my heart sincerely goes to the families in these communities and what they are going through is a million times worse than my travel situation. However, my feedback for the Hyatt Gold Passport staff is, exercise some common sense when dealing with such delicate circumstances.

It also says "All HYATT house™ hotels are smoke-free."

Why don't you just PM GP Concierge and ask them to look into it for you?

They did post that "5 day" message, but when?

Hyatt website, I did not recall seeing such message late last evening, so I assume it's posted this morning

Was the number to call on the website. Hotel is saying it will be closed for 10 days and no fees will be charged. I`m in Denver and a lot of people will be displaced because of the fire. The hotel is closed by order of the State of Colorado and you can not be charged for a closed hotel. Hope your trip works out.
