We hope to attend a concert there in the fall; are concerned about being under-dressed. Will a button-down shirt/v-neck sweater and slacks for my husband work? I'd wear a dressy sweater, nice slacks myself. Will probably not be in the most expensive seats in the house!

Like performances elsewhere if it's opening night you will need to be a little more dressy but for a regular performance what you describe is fine.

you are fine;
the last time I went, I sat downstairs in "one of the better seats".
despite that the dress code was all over the place.
some people were very dressy with dark suits and tie for men and nice dresses for women while some were wearing a nice polo shirt with jeans.
I would not wear shorts or sandals, no tank top but I have seen people with nice T-shirts.

You'll be fine and the spread from high to low on dressed up runs thru the expensive seats too.

Don't go too cheap on seats at Garnier. There are a lot of boxes that hold three rows of two chairs each and the second row has a tough view and some of the third rows have very restrictive views, plus the odd seat numbering makes knowing what you're buying tough. We only get the first two price categories of tickets there and if you stick to that, you should be in good shape.

Merci! That's what we were hoping. Also, thanks for heads-up on choosing our seats...actually, we are going to the ballet at the Opera House, and will be very careful when choosing seats.

Ballet tickets tend to be hard to come by, so book as early as you can. You might also try the new Bourse Opera, a second-hand ticket site run by the Opera for people who can't use the tickets they bought. Last week I bought a decent seat for a nearly sold-out performance. I provided my credit card info on the site and chose in person delivery, the seller sent me an e-mail, we met, he gave me the ticket, I gave him a code, and later confirmed receipt of the ticket on the Bourse site so he could get paid. There's a fee of around 5€.
