Looking for a great app for the iPad and iPhone for the NYC subway station . Ideally I would like to see where the nearest station is as a location button.. Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Google maps has it on my Android phone. Included is the real-time listing of the next few trains. This isn't available on the iphone or ipad?

There's this link from the MTA website - the Trip Planner or Transit Directions options look promising:

Alternatively, you could go low-tech and just grab a map from the subway ticket booth :D

Keep in mind, though, that depending on your destination, the closest subway station may not actually be the best one to go to. Sometimes it makes more sense to walk a couple of blocks to a different line and take a direct trip than going to the closest station, which may require a transfer and thus take more time.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with NYC and whether you are commuting strictly in Manhattan or include the outer boroughs.

I ask because I would still suggest you get a physical printed map to view the entire lay-out as sometimes the closest station isn't the best train especially in Manhattan if/when you can walk 1-2 blocks and get a more direct route/path. This is especially true if traveling from mid-town to lower Manhattan as the Orange & Yellow routes (B,F,D,M,Q) will require a transfer to get to Lower Manhattan but some subway lines even on the same route will get you directly to lower Manhattan.

I use KICK Lite, a free app for the iPhone. It's not the "official" map, but actually does some things better. And, importantly, it works offline.
