Hello all, First time poster, long time reader. I have a question I am hoping someone can answer for me. I am going to be taking a trip to Mexico soon from New England flying Airtran. I ordered and received a bag I thought I might use for a carry on but when seeing it in person it looks to large. The bag and it's dimensions can be seen here. Fossil Estate Canvas Duffel (http://www.zappos.com/fossil-estate-canvas-duffel-khaki?zfcTest=fw:1#prdInfo) Has anyone seen this bag in person or by looking at the dimensions can someone tell me if this bag would be allowed as carry on with this airline? Thank you so much for any help you can provide.

You shouldn't have any problem stowing that bag in an overhead bin. It's smaller than most carry-on rollerbags, and duffles can be compressed if necessary. I routinely carry-on a 25-inch long duffle, and it fits just fine without having to place it parallel to the opening of the baggage bin.

Good-looking bag!

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. My original thought was it could be compressed if needed but the bag has some sort of frame built into it. I don't know how to describe it. The top hinges open in a v? shape? If you look at the last picture you might be able to get an idea of what I mean. The bag is very stiff and I don't believe it will compress at all or is meant to. It is very hard to explain. Again, thanks for the reply.

Grab a ruler and measure the external dimensions. Compare that with airtran's carry on policy. Just because it will fit in an overhead doesn't mean it will fit the airline's policy. Be prepared to be held to the policy, although it may or many it happen in practice.

Different airlines have their specific travel baggage allowances and limitations. The primary rule is the size limit stating that bags carried on board must be small enough to store below your seat or in the overhead compartment.

Airtrain I believe allows 24 x 16 x 10, and that bag is 21 x 11 x 9, so you should be fine.

Most limits are something like 22x14x9. So as long as the listed dimensions aren't too far under actual dimensions the only dimension listed that's too high is the depth. The video shows that it does compress at least some in that dimension.

The frame seems to be around the top opening. That is going to limit compression of the bag's length (width in zappos listed measurements). So I'd measure there, but as long as you are on an airline that allows 22" of length you should be fine in terms of the official policy. And it will likely fit it overheads even if the policy is stricter.

that's a soft bag. you can mold it to fit the sizer and the overhead bin. I wouldn't worry about it unless you are going to really blow that up with way too many stuff that stick out to the sides. Otherwise, I think you are good to go......

I hope you are not going to land at Mexico City airport.....

Nice-looking bag, very Indiana Jones-ish. The dimensions given should work for most any domestic airline, just be sure you don't over-stuff it.

After breaking it down and taking all the packing materials that were inside the bag out, it looks like it will compress slightly. Thank you to everyone for your incredibly fast responses. And to the person who sent the link about Mexico City, I always say you only live once. Kidding aside, I'm flying into Cancun for my honeymoon.
