Bargain!
Speaking of the opening ceremony, flying out of LCY the other night, I noticed the stadium had a huge aerial photo of London laid out across it (with a model of the stadium in the correct place). It was a bit like watching a recursive version of the opening titles of EastEnders. Perhaps the 'green and pleasant land' countryside scene isn't all we'll be seeing...

One of my friends is in the opening and closing ceremonies as a dancer, and she has to go to the stadium to practice some of the bigger bits. Think it was down for that, as she was down there on Friday.

That seems to tie up - my flight was on Friday evening. Plus I was in the park earlier on in the day for work, and did see a few extra signs up for 'Ceremonies' people to follow.

Women's High Jump Qualifying Round - Groups A & B
Men's Decathlon Discus Throw - Group A
Men's Decathlon Discus Throw - Group B
Men's 4 x 400m Relay Round 1

The thinking is a controlled official revealing of parts of the ceremony will mean it is les likely that something would leak out.
Danny Boyle has already stated that there will be some surprises too.
I also have a fiend who is in the ceremony and whilst he has not said in detail what he is doing (due to the confidentialty agreement) he did say that his segment definitly was not on the 'green and pleasant' land setting

Better mention a couple of things here.
First, buying, selling and trading is not permitted on this board (outside of Coupon Connection).
Second, Olympics tickets carry a name, and you can be certain they'll be strict about checking ID on the gates. The only way to trade them is via the official resale site.
By all means, do keep recommending places to legally get hold of tickets, though!

I thought they were going to allow "friends" and family to use the tickets? As stated here "Our ticketing policy states that tickets are non-transferable. However, providing you as the lead booker are contactable on the day in case of query, a member of your family or a friend may use tickets you can no longer use."

Yes, LOCOG is planning on having ticket booths set up around town selling tickets. The are loading a few new tickets onto their site daily, it pays to check often.
For those with access to Twitter, @volshy has the best information. It does appear as though CoSport USA will likely not obtain any more tickets, outside of football.
Be very wary of purchasing tickets from other than official outlets. Visa has already flexed it's muscle with some US ticket brokers.

You won't. It's illegal to sell through anything other than the licensed resellers. Ebay won't list them, and the ticket would be cancelled too, so even if you bought it, it would not be valid.

What more can I say, Co-Sport is the pits.
Actually, I take that back, Co-Sport does have opening tickets available. But in a package:
2 nights at the Copthorne Tara hotel
2 Cat B tickets to Opening
All for the low, low price of $10,958.
Of course the Copthorne Tara hotel does have rooms available for those nights for less than $400 USD per night, so you are only paying over $5,000 per Cat B ticket
.
Or, if you want to upgrade to a Cat A ticket, the price goes up to $16,935.
What a deal.

I happen to be in London during the Olympics. As I rather not deal with the pitiful selection/prices at Co-Sport (I live in Canada), can I assume that there will be *some* tickets available for purchase directly from the box office at the venues? I'm not really picky in terms of which events to go to, going to be there more for the experience.

Probably something, it depends how late the overseas authorities return their tickets. However, you may be happier with a £20 ground ticket which gets you into the park but not the events. Anything cheap (ie sub £100 per ticket) which goes back onto the UK website seems to go fairly quickly. Remember also that a lot of events are not in the Olympic Park and so less worth bothering with for the 'experience' - I'd certainly avoid the Excel and Earls Court conference centres, whatever is on, since they are atmosphere-free zones at the best of times.

That makes sense in one way. Unless they have a collection only booth, I hate getting stuck behind people asking questions, uming and arhing of the selection left.
It would make sense to have a booth for usold tickets, but I don't think there will be many until on the day. There isn't that much left on the website, what comes in is in dribs and drabs and I check it 3 times a day at least at the moment to see what returns their are.

When I got mine I asked if anything else was available and was told very little for the Olympics, but more for the Paralympics.

Then went thought the wait screen
Then there came the message to say that they'd been reserved and I was one click away from buying them.... Except.... Despite having selected cat D tickets and confirmed I wanted Cat D tickets, what I was actually invited to pay for were two "full price" tickets at over £4,000 :eek::eek:

In the excitement I'd so nearly pressed 'YES'
Anyway, the other day I did snag 2 OAP price £16 tickets a £2 child ticket for the standard women's volleyball (I'll be at work). My mother used to play for her region in Spain in her youth and they'll be cheering for Japan (my daughter is Japanese). Tickets would have been £30 each, so three for £34 is pretty good.
Paralympic prices for OAPs are a steal, lots and lots of events at £5 a pop.
We're also going to see a para equestrian event in the grounds of the Maritime Museum in Greenwich one Friday. The £10 adult ticket includes the 9 zone travel card making it very attractive. You also get a third off river transport.
Our deluxe day out means involves taking my daughter, her playmate, my +60 parents and myself. We'll get the Northern Line to Waterloo, catch the 7:08am express river bus to Greenwich (25 minutes), see the horses and riders compete, have a picnic, go to the museum (children's wing) then see the Cutty Sark, get the river bus to London and hop on the tube. Back to Camden by 4pm.
Total cost for the 5 of us including boat journeys, £50. Not bad.

I noticed some reasonable air fares to London, reasonable hotel rates, and thought why not be stupid and jump on a plane with my wife and head to the Olympics?
Trouble is, I'm in the US, and there seems to be no way to get tickets. Lots of tickets available for Euro folk, but nothing in the US. If it was just me, I'd take my chances and figure there's some way to buy tickets on-site regardless of nationality, but that wouldn't fly with my wife.
Time is short; I'd have to leave in just a few days. Which of course is what makes it fun!
Amazing how you simply cannot find the info I need on the 'net. Did all sorts of google searches and nothing useful. And no, cosport, the official provider for tickets outside of the UK, shows nothing available.
Thanks!

I was confused when I read the title, "What does being a U.S. citizen have to do with the ability to purchase Olympic tickets?"
After reading it, I realised the issue is that you are in the U.S. Anyone in the U.S., whether U.S. citizen or not, would have the same issues. You could be a British citizen living in Japan and still face the same problem you do.
This (http://www.tickets.london2012.com/howtobuy.html) does not work?

You shouldn't have a problem getting tickets, but just keep in mind that there are a lot of fake tickets out there. If you are just looking for an "Olympic" experience and don't need to see Phelps swim, or USA basketball then you likely would have better chances.

A US citizen cannot; tickets must be purchased through the US-authorized website, which is cosport.com. Cosport.com stopped selling individual tickets some time ago, and high-priced "hospitality" packages shortly thereafter.
So... being a US citizen has everything to do with my not being able to buy tickets ahead of time, and the British citizen living in Japan that you hypothesized? No issue at all. He/she can buy them on-line.
Thus my quandry. Is there a legit ticket-buying avenue available to me?

If you are just looking for an "Olympic" experience and don't need to see Phelps swim, or USA basketball then you likely would have better chances. If it were just me, I'd wing it. There are a number of events I'd be interested in, that don't require tickets. Cycling (road & time trial, but road will be over before I'd get there), rowing, and maybe a few others. And I suspect I'd be able to buy tickets there. But that wouldn't fly for my wife. She's not that interested in cycling or rowing; more the traditional "female interest" Olympic sports. Swimming, diving, gymnastics.

had a business associate who bought one of those packages. the one thing i recall him getting was ice dancing. i would presume one can distinguish real from fake if one has them in hand. i would presume they can be purchased on site. i have purchased very valuable tickets on site at discount, starting with a bruins stanley cup game, and a met opera opening. last minute prices are most favorable. i'll bet you could get ice dancing or ping pong or women's hand air gun for next to nothing. i watched the women columbia-usa soccer game on the telley. the stadium was less than half full.

So I see an opportunity to get to London and start to investigate where I can get tickets. Create an account on Cosport, but no individual tickets to be had that I can find on the site. For someone who decides at the last minute that they want to buy tickets, where do you go to make a purchase? Are there outlets in London/UK where a non-UK resident can buy an available ticket? Or do I have to purchase through the Cosport site, even if I am sitting at the Hilton Metropole in London?

I was looking into this also as my daughter is in london on school business. It looks like you have to buy on a website and not at the box office. you can pick up after you have purchased. go to www.cosport.com. I got this address from the olympic site www.tickets.london2012.com
Use your visa creditcard and you can protect yourself from fraud. But I'm sure this is a good site.

In theory, individual tickets are still available on cosport (From their "Timeline": "Individual Tickets Sales On-Going Tickets still available. Check the website to view the current available inventory"), with the cosport will call disaster, who knows if/when we'll see them return:
In the meantime, earlier tonight:
http://www.tickets.london2012.com/
had a (relative) ton of tickets available for a variety of events (in a range of price categories), including the M's basketball final, closing ceremony, etc.
Official transfer terms are here (sec 17):

but I don't know what will really happen if you have a british friend buy and collect a single-ticket order for you, for instance....
Frustrating, to say the least!

Box offices were open in the park yesterday for 'recycled' tickets - people leaving sessions early had their tickets scanned and cancelled, and those seats immediately became available.
It wasn't immediately obvious what the queues were for:there was no signage, and just some harried Ticketmaster staff and puzzled volunteers to try to explain things. But a friend who was at the first session of the women's basketball reported queuing "not long" to get courtside seats for the second match of the second session (USA v Croatia) for £5.
When I saw the box offices outside the Basketball Arena and the Copper Box for the handball around 5pm, there were queues of around 20-30 people. I suspect a good strategy might be turning up towards the end of the first game in a session. Provided you're already in the park, of course.

Citizenship has absolutely nothing to do with Olympic ticketing. Residency does, but that is also irrelevant now that almost all new purchases are being set up for collection/will call.
If you have a VISA card and an address in the UK (not necessarily the billing address - a hotel is fine), you can purchase tickets on the main www.tickets.london2012.com website for collection at a box office.
I am an Indian citizen, living in Ghana, using a US bank VISA card, with a Canadian billing address, and used the above site to purchase my tickets using a friend's address in London. No issues whatsoever.

Wow... they are appalled at the number of empty seats and make it nearly impossible for people to buy a ticket for an event when they are right there. Sounds like they reverted to an airline computer system of the 70s, where "group" inventory was parceled out and no central inventory exists for someone at a ticket window to access.
I guess I would have to investigate which events/venues have the likelihood of people departing mid-event. Sounds like too much work for the casual fan.

Right, as a US resident, I apparently am at the mercy of Cosport, who has no individual tickets for sale. So while I might be standing in London right outside the venue, apparently I cannot buy a ticket, even if tickets are available for sale on the UK or other sites. I have not seen anything regarding sales at the venues, other than resales of tickets from people who showed up and left early. Given that, I am not likely to make the effort to attend anything.

Quite certain. Once your tickets are purchased, the only thing you need is the original VISA card used to purchase the tickets. You do have to create and validate your account with a valid UK address though to be eligible to purchase in the first place.
The purpose of residency requirements is that a number of tickets are allocated to each NOC to ensure that all tickets are not snapped up by home fans/touts. The NOCs then sell these via their authorised re-sellers (which is CoSport for the USA). Therefore, if you are purchasing from an authorised re-seller quota, residency requirements do apply. Quotas do not apply for the direct sales, other than for the initial allocation. Even then, anyone with a mailing address in the UK could apply, regardless of their immigration status!

There are plenty of non-UK/EU citizens who reside in the UK. If they wanted an original photo-ID issued by an EU state, they would have said so.
Once again, the purpose of the residency requirements is not to prevent people from buying tickets directly, but rather to ensure that there is an equitable distribution of tickets across the various NOCs.

And regarding what they "wanted" for ID, I provided copy from one company that explained that in detail. And that detail said they require more than just a hotel address.
Too bad nobody reading this thread has actually picked up tickets from will-call so they could let us know what they truly ask for.

If it's like Atlanta 1996, then it's all about a combination of venue size and sports popularity. Swimming or gymnastics? Fuhgeddaboutit! Track and field? Don't expect to see the finals.
OTOH, the easiest ticket to get was (drum roll)...........................FIELD HOCKEY! Tons of those. Same would go for less-popular events held in stadiums.

Jul 30, 12, 3:16 am
If you haven't actually got tickets, for the Olympics already, I wouldn't bother wasting money on coming to the UK unless you just fancy a few days here, and should you get any tickets count it as a bonus.
There are few (if any) tickets for the popular events left, and things like the football competition are being held all round the country. Although they are trying to sort out the "empty seats" problems, the organisers are looking to give them to the (off duty)military security guards and students, rather than sell them.
That said, you CAN see some events for free if you go to the venues. You can watch the equestrian events for free from a distance, likewise the sailing, rowing, Marathon, long distance walks and the endurance events like the triathlon or in fact any event not being held in a a fixed venue.
My husband is going to watch the sailing next weekend and will be watching it from the sea, and he will have 2-3 days of events to watch for little or no cost as will our daughter and a couple of friends, you can also get a fantastic view from the hill behind Weymouth - in fact according to a friend who lives there, the view from the hill is FAR better than the official seating

You can't get into the Olympic park without a ticket but you can get close to some venues eg the routes of the road races, the marathon, the hill behind Weymouth for the sailing ....
However they do have a ticket resale point where people who leave can turn their tickets in to be resold for a far more modest amount, and after the empty spaces furore they are putting returned sponsor tickets up for sale each evening so you need to create your account and hover.....

Re rwoman's post, the issue is not whether you have them, but can a US resident buy one today.. tomorrow, etc. If you made the purchase while in the US early on... ok. If you purchased a ticket in the past few days. I assume that "living in the UK" really means that you have a valid UK address and paid with a UK bank based Visa.... thus being a Resident in the UK, though a US Citizen perhaps.
Agree it would be nice to have some kind of access to individual tickets, though that looks to be as much an issue with Cosport as anything else.

It seems few of the volunteers around the park have been told much about it, and it does require being in Olympic Park already, and a certain element of a pastime the British excel at: queue first, ask questions later.
If there's more than one game in a session, people often leave after the first. Their tickets are scanned on the way out, and the seats immediately go back on sale at a nearby box office. I started waiting at the basketball arena box office at around 3.30pm with about 200 people in front of me; and by just after 5pm was inside watching a womens' qualifier between Russia and Brazil.
It cost me £5, and I ended up in a Category A seat (surrounded by Aussies from the earlier game). And it wasn't a typical London queue: everyone was quite chatty - I was surrounded by a mix of people who'd been to earlier sessions, people who had just bought park tickets because they didn't think they'd get to see any sport, and volunteers.
I don't think all the venues have this system in operation, but I reckon for early stage games, the basketball arena isn't a bad bet: it's big, so there's more chances of seats becoming free than, say, the Velodrome, which is comparatively tiny.

Last night a number of tickets went on sale in a lardge swathe of events in Swimming and Archerey across a number of price ranges. I had checked at 9, but nothing, it wasn't till 11.30 I saw them, including the 100m final.
My first attempt saw a wait time of only a minute, but even though I was allocated seats and my card details were pre-loaded, the transaction failed. This cycle repeated for 90 mins until eventually I got tickets for an Athletics event. The last attempt I was in a "queue" for 15 minutes. I was about to give up as it was 1am at that point!

I can report mild success......last night it seems the LOC posted a fair number of tix and i was able to get two events...athletics and B-Ball
It was a painful process in that several times it looked like other events had been secured but when posting the payment it returned with an error message. It took some 3 hours to aquire the two events.
One set of tix was 'print your own' (PYO)...i have the PDF so i assume thats a go for sure.
The other (athletics) would not allow PYO but did allow for site pick-up.....i wonder if this had to do with the event being in Olympic Park?
I checked the pick up rules..." printed copy of your ticket confirmation email, the Visa card used to purchase the tickets and one piece of original photo ID (photocopies will not be accepted)"
It says nothing about 'citizenship' (or even residency) so i am hopeful that will not be an issue....residency is a loose term in the UK anyway (from what i have been told)
I will let you know if i get any more.....thanks for the help !

If you are here in London, one good option is to go to the Thomas Cook location at Marble Arch. They have tickets reserved for packages with hotels, etc., which you can still buy. Each day they sell what's left at this one location. I was there today and according to the person with whom I spoke they sell any tickets they may have at face value and they may have as few as one for an event and as many as ten. A about 9am they sell any they have for the late morning and mid-day. A about 1pm they sell what they have for the late afternoon. At about 3:30, 4pm, or 4:30 (that timing was vague), they sell the evening tickets. I was there at 4:30 and there were no tickets, but he told me that at 9am they sold off tickets to gymnastics and equestrian. So, if you are flexible on what you are willing to see, and you can get to Marble Arch at the right times, you may get lucky. I will be there at 9am tomorrow...
On a side note, I was at the Olympic Park today for swimming and the logistics are good. Security lines were short and quick, and everything moved along well. Once you are in the park they now have a system in place to fill empty seats for those who leave early (as noted above by Teflon), but you queue in different areas for different venues and the waits looked to be long...

American residents: note that a batch of tickets went on sale on the CoSport site this morning at about 9am. They. Went very quickly, and I snatched up tickets for two Hockey games tomorrow! The tickets included events for August 1 (today), 2, and 3, and were mostly A and B category tickets. Events included gymnastics, basketball, swimming, volleyball, etc. As I understand it from the people at CoSport's will call location, these are tickets they keep as a "cushion" to deal with unexpected ticket problems (like my beach volleyball seats I pick up a few days ago that were not together, so they swapped me out for some that we're). So, today they cleaned out their stock of tickets for the next three days, but one can presume that there will be other batches of these extra tickets on sale every day, or maybe every few days, as the games continue...
Also, an update on the last minute tickets at Thomas Cook in Marble Arch. They only had a few tickets this morning (1 for beach volleyball and 1 for weightlifting). I got a slightly different story there this morning, with the guy saying that they sell tickets 1-2 hours before any given event, if they have them. Either way, they do sell last-minute face value tickets, but you need to get lucky...

When I collected a ticket, they just wanted to see some photo ID. (Despite having a printout of the confirmation email, the agent still had a bit of trouble finding my order - "it says here you've ordered Paralympic tickets?")
According to the ticketing FAQs (http://www.london2012.com/spectators/tickets/box-office/), tickets for football matches can be bought from venue box offices with cash or Visa cards.

You should be OK I reckon - they ask for a photo ID, not proof of address.
After all, you could use a passport as photo ID, which at least for me in the UK does not have my address in it. When I picked my tickets up, they only took a quick glance at ID (I used my driving licence) and credit card to check I was me. Queue was very international, I didn't get the impression they were trying to catch people out in anything, rather get the tickets handed out a quickly and efficiently as possible.
YMMV of course!

Unfortunate news for those looking for tickets:
Important Update re @2012TicketAlert
When we set out to code this on Sunday/Monday, we never anticipated where the idea would go, the impact it would have or the publicity and support it would attract. It just seemed like a cool idea which could make a difference, and that was enough for us to spend a lot of our time developing it, maintaining it, and answering the hundreds of tweets, emails and questions we've received over the past three days - all with no prospect of making money from it or promoting our Company.
However, it seems someone at LOCOG has taken exception to our idea (or the publicity it is getting) and instead of reaching out to us or addressing the lack of a notification system, they have simply blocked our access to their server. This means we are unable to check or post any new ticket alerts.
We've done some testing and it seems they've blocked all "non-website" access (removing the opportunity to move to another server) so, unless they make a decision to re-allow us access, I'm afraid your only option to discover re-listed tickets now is to sit on www.London2012.com and keep pressing F5.
All of us here feel shocked and let down by this move, especially given the ongoing problems with ticketing and the ticket purchasing website, and can't understand why they'd take such an aggressive move to block a service which was non-commercial, which we've not been seeking any recognition for on a Company level (so there's no gain for us), and - which most importantly of all - was making a significant difference to many people and their ability to get tickets.
That said, it is their prerogative to do this - although we would point out that the alert was not against the Terms of Use of the www.london2012.com website, nor have these terms been updated to make it so.
So all we can really say is thank you all for your support, congratulations to those who got tickets with our help - and enjoy the Games!
Until next time,
Adam
PS. If you want a chance to show your support still, we'll be keeping the charity http://www.justgiving.com/2012TicketAlert page open. Be cool for something good to still come out of this :)

I went to Stratford Gate yesterday to pick up tickets to the Athletics I got online at 1am Monday night.
The queue was less than when I went to pick up my Gymnastic ticketss, but it slowed down as I neared the booth as one family were having issues. They had to be taken aside and wait for an official to tell them that the tickets they ordered weren't from Locog, and they'd have to contact the company involved. He also pointed out that it says on the paper they had that the company doesn't sell or trade in Olympic tickets. They weren't native English speakers, so I think they had some difficulty grasping what was going on. I felt sorry for them.
On the way in, there was also a guw with a sign up saying "Miracle needed. Ticket wanted for tonight". Not sure how much luck he would have!

It might have been recently repaved (and has a new bridge over Stratford High Street), but that's not a new path. The Greenway has been there for years, and takes you all the way from Victoria Park to the Thames at Beckton (although the top end is currently inside Olympic Park's big fence).
If it's a wee bit on the smelly side, that's because it's built on top of the Northern Outfall Sewer. Though you will pass the byzantine Abbey Mills Pumping Station (http://www.flickr.com/photos/andyworthington/7570408772/), nicknamed the "cathedral of sewage".
It's a good tip, though. If you're not averse to a nice stroll, the Victoria Gate will deposit you near Victoria Park and the Regent's Canal. There's a big screen in Victoria Park to watch more of the action, and it's a pleasant mile and a bit walk to Bethnal Green station (or Mare Street, from where you can get buses down to Liverpool Street and London Bridge)
