Hi All

My sister and husband are trying to decide between Qantas and Virgin Australia for a BNE-LHR-BNE roundtrip.

They are on a tight budget and will be buying the cheapest economy fare they can.

According to the two airline websites, Qantas discount economy earns 1 point per mile flown (earning about 20,000 QF points round trip) but Virgin earns only 0.5 point per mile flown (this earning half just 10,000 points)

Considering their "burn" tables look similar, is Virgin really half as generous as Qantas?

Or do I have something wrong. If someone collects miles why would you fly Virgin to London. You'd be earning half what you would with Qantas. Is Virgin really that uncompetative with their rival?

If you are on a tight budget look at the middle east airlines emirates, qatar, eithad and Asian airlines: not Qantas

Virgin to London out of Brisbane would most likely be with Singapore Airlines and from memory they give 70 to 100% mileage in Discount Economy. The only 50% mileage figures are SQ on a Thai Royal Orchid Plus qualifying fare class.

Internationally with Qantas only "Y" class fares are Economy, everything else is Discount Economy and half points.

Domestically there are more fare classes that gain full points.

Long haul economy is not that effective for mileage earning.

Internationally with Qantas only "Y" class fares are Economy, everything else is Discount Economy and half points.. No such beast as "half points" on a QF flight creditting to QFF. ALL QF flights will give full mileage credit to QFF. You are thinking of status credits, where you would be correct, but the mileage will be full miles.
