Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan - checked bags and U space?

From the AS web site: "First Class Upgrade (U) (confirmed in U class on/after May 16, 2012 for travel on/after July 10, 2012) $20-1st bag, $20-2nd bag"
So, does this mean if I have a ticket for a flight with the U space, and my fare qualifies, but I do not take the upgrade my checked bags are free as an AS elite, but if I take the upgrade my bags will be $20 for the first two bags? If I am MVPG or MVPG75k does that mean the fees are still waived and my bags are still free?

MVPG's and 75K's always get the first two checked bags for free (on an AS/QX flight and not oversize or overweight).

Fortunately, as dave1013 indicated, that is not the case. Otherwise, that would be extremely South of Expected.
I do just have to  a little bit (a lot, actually) at Alaska for making the issue so complicated now that elites are confused enough to be asking this question.
Job security for Mileage Plan administrators. ;)
I'll be applying for one of those jobs so as to torture FTers. :)
Every rule has to have an exception, as baliktad explains below:

It's very simple...
In First Class bags are free.
Unless you upgraded, in which case you pay.
Unless you're elite, in which case they're still free.
Unless they're oversized in some manner, in which case you still pay.
Unless you have regular-sized bags and are on the same PNR as an elite member, in which case they're free again.
Unless that same PNR happens to be a group reservation, in which case you're back to paying.
Unless you're a club 49 member, in which case you're off the hook again..
Unless you're flying a non-AK route, in which case you still have to pony up.
Unless you're an an AA elite member, in which case they're complimentary.
Unless you didn't put in your AA number, in which case you will be shelling out.
Unless you're also DL elite, in which case you won't need to pay at the counter.
Unless you're DL Silver, in which case you better bring a credit card to pay.
Unless you're travelling on an international journey connecting to a partner carrier, in which case you can probably avoid a charge.
Unless the international journey is just to Mexico, in which case you're still assessed the fee.
Unless you're flying to Mexico City or Guadalajara, in which case the first bag is free again.
I'm sure I've missed several more conditions, but it seems very simple to me. Anyone should be able to quickly understand at a glance whether they will be paying a bag fee or not.

Careful. The next "enhancement" they make to simplify it will just to be to charge everyone for bags.

Exceptions 3, 4 and 7 described above are only applicable on Thursdays divisble by 3. When Tuesday is a prime number, then all bags to airports with an "L" in their LOC_ID are free.
