Applicable Routes
- 773 on JL005/006 (NRT-JFK) from July 15 2012 on alternate days and daily from August 5 2012
- Will begin to expand to LAX and ORD from end of Aug and to be completed by early Oct

- LHR, CDG, FRA by next spring
- Schedule subject to change
- The availability of JAL SKY Wi-Fi depends on the aircraft and in the event of aircraft changes, the service may not be available. For the latest updates, please visit www.jal.co.jp/skywifi/ after 6pm the day before departure.

Charges
- US$11.95 for the first hour, or US$21.95 for 24 hours upon activation. Customers who purchase 24 hours of usage can continue to enjoy the service within the time limit, on a connecting JAL international flight that has the JAL SKY Wi-Fi system.
- Payable by credit card only.
- Special rate of US$10.75 for the first hour and US$19.75 for 24 hours of usage for payments made by JAL CARD, JAL USA CARD, or the JAL Shanghai Pudong Development Bank credit card

Free Trial
- From July 15 to September 30, 2012, customers in First and Executive Class on applicable flights are invited to experience JAL SKY Wi-Fi with a complimentary one-hour trial of the new service.
- Between April 17 and June 30, 2013, passengers traveling in First Class, Business Class and Premium Economy are invited to experience JAL SKY Wi-Fi with a complimentary one-hour trial of the new service.

So I was right about the extended CGK equipment downgrade was related to the inflight wi-fi upgrade :)

Why nothing for BOS/788? Brand new aircraft JL will be holding onto for many years to come would make sense to add wifi.

Even NH's wi-fi starting from sumer 2013 does not include 787. My guess is it requires regulatory approval and 787 requires more testings for wi-fi?

Here is the answer to your question. Currently there's no technology to install the antenna on 787's carbon fiber fuselage and Boeing is looking into a solution at the moment.

Looks like if you buy F, C, PY (JFK-NRT) ticket form JTB, you will get 1 hour free coupon for JAL SKY Wi-Fi. Not sure if that means you can get 2 hours of free wi-fi if you are flying in F and C (one from JTB and one from JAL)

Looks like Boeing has solved the 787 wi-fi problem and it will come to 787 soon

The company, which already equips its 737s with kit that allows airlines to offer on-board Wi-Fi and cellular access, will also begin kitting out its 747-8 and 777 by the end of 2013, it announced on Thursday.

Boeing's 787 aircraft can also currently be retrofitted with Wi-Fi, and the range should get "a full set of connectivity offerings as part of its standard catalogue" by the end of this year, the company said.

You lose wi-fi but gained free PY seats. JAL SKY Wi-Fi is limited to the 777-300ER fleet for now

It has a few restrictions, but I honestly don't remember if VOIP is one of them. If I should use it again, I'll check and let you know.

Indeed I hope that VOIP is one of the restrictions though, cuz I really don't want to hear someone's incessantly babble on a usually quite and peaceful JAL flight.

I was trying out the service for a small data streaming program (no media bulk files), and I was getting quite a bit of delay, especially when entering commands.
