I'm in the midst of planning a trip to China next year. I plan on staying at one of these properties on a virtuoso booking. I also intend on using a confirmed suite upgrade. Any thoughts of whether I should pick the Shanghai or Beijing Park Hyatt? I'll have to slum it at Hilton properties in whatever city doesn't get the PH.

Thanks

We stayed at both properties in Park Suites last year and while both are great hotels, we found Beijing superior in both service and the size of the suite itself. That said, the views from the PH Shanghai are hard to beat.

My experience is not so recent now, but I'd pick Shanghai and not just for the view -- but also for the service and physical plant. In Beijing, I had a/c and hot water problems in my suite on at least three different stays.

thanks for the info... though looking at the websites, the Park Suite at the PH Beijing is quoted as 85 sq m and at the PH Shanghai is 130 sq m... is the layout better in Beijing so it feels bigger?

Having stayed at both, Shanghai is quite a lot larger. It has a rectangular dining table (not huge). But both are large, and very nice.

I would recommend staying at the PH Shanghai, and then at the Hilton Beijing Wanfijing which is an excellent property. The Hiltons in Shanghai are pretty modest.

I would add that Beijing has an extremely nice bathroom with a spa-size bathtub, something we considered extremely nice for an entry-level suite. Other than that, I would agree. Both are nice suites.

thanks. That's the plan. I was also considering the WA on the Bund in Shanghai.

Just completing a stay at the PH Beijing now and spent a week at the PH Shanghai about 2 months ago. I can say without a doubt that I prefer Shanghai. Keep in mind that both of these properties are spectacular. I wouldn't say either is lacking in any way.

My experience this week in Beijing has been quite nice. I booked via Virtuoso agent who put me in touch with the Chief Concierge personally. I chose to upgrade from a standard room to a Park Suite for 6K points. Then upon request, the concierge was kind enough to confirm an upgrade from the Park Suite to a Deluxe Suite based on the Virtuoso benefits (which specify an upgrade if available at the time of check in - but he confirmed it a few weeks out).

While in Shanghai I found the service to be good, I find the service in Beijing to be even better. Everyone - and I mean everyone - greets my by name. There are staff everywhere. Even at 5am in the gym - they know who you are. Impressive.

The suites are fantastic. This particular room is situated on a corner with numerous windows, an absolutely massive bathroom and comfortable living room area. My only complaint in the room is that there is no sound system. With the exception of the iPod dock, there's no stereo system - I had thought that B&O systems were pretty much standard at Park Hyatt's internationally. I guess not. The iPod dock doesn't work so great in such a large multi room suite.

In contrast, the Park Suite in Shanghai was glorious. Much more modern design aesthetic, better soaring views of the river and Bund and overall a better layout and design. While the shower wasn't as grand as in Beijing, I enjoyed the room in Shanghai more. It also felt quite a bit newer. The quotes from Ghandi stenciled into plates on the bathroom wall I also found to be quite tranquil. In addition, the Shanghai Park features the latest B&O sound system with a custom CD set for the hotel. Very enjoyable.

I find the breakfast (comp'ed with Virtuoso and/or as a Diamond) to be decent in Beijing, but not quite as luxurious as in Shanghai. The views are similar in both properties, but in general Shanghai offers better views with the river, TV tower and Grand Hyatt across the street.

Hotels aside for the moment, I tend to enjoy Shanghai a lot more in general so that makes my review more biased. I must say though that I was impressed with the Xue nightclub at the Park in Beijing on the 6th floor which was even rocking hard at midnight on a Tuesday - somewhat surprising and in stark contrast to Shanghai where the jazz bar on the top floor didn't compare.

So all in all, there are pluses and minuses of course. Both properties are fantastic and I'd highly recommend them. I found the standard rooms at the Park in Shanghai to also be quite nice for those not using points or upgrade certificates for suites.

One more note. Here in Beijing I was provided with two personal butlers who offered to unpack and pack my bags. Nothing like that in Shanghai - although both properties offered in room check in and complimentary drinks and appetizers upon arrival.

Gosh, service in China is starting to approach Tokyo..

I do agree that ph Beijing is the most improved ph from a poor opening .
I am not partial to the room deco and the ridiculous bathroom and tub though.

Re ph Tokyo , actually I find the bej & SH ph to be on par with Tokyo if not better in certain ways . I find the service in china ESP Beijing to be more animated and real , even intuitive .I have always loved the coffee shop and the bunch of very interactive staff ....ESP during breakfast !!

Ph Tokyo is in many ways overrated and too unnecessarily stiff .

Xiu is only loosely affiliated with the hotel (think of them as neighboring tenants with a business alliance), which is why they can get away with packing 2,000+ people in it on a regular basis.
