Early next year I maybe doing a study abroad term in China and when flying internationally I prefer to fly business class or whatever equivalent there is. Now it appears that the airline that offer's the cheapest business class tickets for now is Aeroflot.

However, given Russia's aviation safety record in general how safe is Aeroflot to fly on international flights? Like the quality of pilots, attention to maintenance performed etc?

Also in order to enter US airspace from my understanding, foreign aircraft have to meet certain benchmarks for these. Additionally, I figure Aeroflot also sends it's best pilots, planes, etc for long-range intl routes.

I know I'm probably overreacting given that accidents esp. on long-range international routes are infrequent anyways but how safe is Aeroflot to fly overall?

Safe as any other airline.

Aeroflot proper has not had a fatal incident since 1994 I think. Yes, Russia as a country has not had a particularly poor safety record this year, but that has been other smaller airlines who mainly do domestic flights on older aircraft. I've happily flown Aeroflot all over the place!

You'll be fine and I think service is better than most US airlines.

The modern day Aeroflot is probably safer to fly than most junk US airlines, i.e US Airways and American Airlines.

The planes are, new, new Airbuses for the most part, and the pilots are very well trained. Professional crew.

I would no sooner jump on an SU plane and the junk MD-80 operated by any US carrier.

That said airplanes operated by former CIS republics using old Soviet planes, I would question.

Safer than some of the non junk US airlines as well.

You'll be fine and likely impressed by the whole experience.

Just try to avoid Tu-154. These beasts are fun to fly on, but most of them are very old now.

Just try to avoid Tu-154.With SU that will be no difficult task: they haven't owned any since 2009.
