Club Carlson - REVIEW: Park Plaza Westminster Bridge - London

Booked this property on a 2-for-1 rate at about 60/night + VAT.

I was given the standard room upon check-in - nothing special - one of the rooms that has absolutely no view, but was large and perfectly satisfactory. I asked about an upgrade to a view room, and was told 40£ would give me a Big Ben view, which I turned down.

The rooms themselves were rather large by London standards. Separate shower and bathtub, as well as ample space to walk around. I would say about 20m2 or so, which is fine for the lowest category room at a property, especially in central London. The rooms were clean and well appointed, and the beds were comfortable. As I was traveling with a friend we opted for a two-bed room, which was small but satisfactory.

The hotel was huge, and seemed like a complete tourist hotel - understandable considering the location. The hotel had a decent gym, and a decent pool, which was welcome considering the setting in the heart of London.

Location was directly across from Big Ben, between Waterloo and Westminster tube stops, and a brilliant location for a tourist. #

Again, I paid only 60£ a night, so this might again prove that 50k points for a night in London thanks to the big giveaway is a bad value.

I would recommend this hotel very much, although the recognition for Gold status was nothing more than six mediocre macarons in the room upon arrival. I can't complain about 140 a/i for a London weekend though.....

You might think so, but if I wanted to stay there tonight it would currently cost me a minimum of £249 + tax, so that would be extremely good value!

Booked on 50k points. Cheapest rate would've been 180 GBP for a standard room. Might be related to London Fashion week. Unfortunately I cannot find any 2for1 rates in this hotel not for this stay not in the future :(

Gold treatment:

Room with no view at all
1 bottle of still water. Glass bottle. Branded after the name of the hotel (!)
Small plate with some fruits
No lounge access
No free breakfast

The good:

Location!!!
Comfortable, modern, functional room that also feels expensive
Flat-screen TV is above work desk, can be seen form the work desk
Tea and coffee making facilities
Bath and separate shower
Fast internet, about 5 Mbit/s from each of my devices. Completely free everywhere in the hotel, unlimited number of devices, no authentication
Great room service, much better than on average
Nice pool, especially considering location!

On the negative side is breakfast. I didn't like it. Overcrowded, only Full English part of the breakfast. I was redirected from overcrowded main restaurant to a large meeting room. Queues, slow restocking. No cold cuts, no fresh juices, no fish whatsoever. I pre-paid GBP 12 at check-in and was not happy. There are quite a few places nearby to have better breakfast for less. Staff could have been more positive but again... this is central London with no UK based staff.

I would definitely stay again if that location would be handy. This is the best and most luxury Park Plaza I've stayed at so far.

Thanks for reviews, just booked yesterday for a December stay (on points, as the room rate w/o tax was already approaching £200). So far Plaza on the River is my absolute favourite, which however, is a bit further out and lacks sauna/pool.

I'm a bit wary about the sheer size of the Westminster one, and it doesn't sound like a very warm place (tourist bunker full of staff that could be more positive?!).

Edit: Was in touch with hotel by email - upgrades at this hotel are limited to the most desirable rooms of the BOOKED room category. So this seems one of the few Club Carlson properties that don't provide category upgrades.

I was there last month (Sep-2012). No upgrade whatsoever, 2 bottles of water, that's it.

I've got no window, no view, no breakfast, basically ain't got no nothing.
