(Reuters) - Turkish national carrier Turkish Airlines (THYAO.IS) may be a potential bidder for Aer Lingus (AERL.I), just days after rival Irish airline Ryanair (RYA.I) made a surprise buyout bid, according to a report in the Sunday Business Post.

Turkish Airlines is assessing Ireland's 75-year-old former flag carrier and is "very interested" according to sources.

last week it was thinking to use the money to buy B748i or A380s, so the focus is not there either. ;)

I wonder if FR got wind of this on the grapevine, hence it's recent share price inflating takeover attempt.

Can't see this happening. Nothing in it for TK, unless they wanted to disrupt whatever plans EY (have out of spite). Not sure how EI makes sense for EY either, but they have lots of cash so that does not matter.

However, I think IAG or B6 are the only airlines that might be a good fit for EI and since B6 are non-EU, that leaves IAG.

And I swear it has nothing to do with the fact that the TK forum has an Irish moderator :D

And as expected (after the Lot idea) the Sunday Business Post article was just hot air (on RTE (http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0629/turkish-airlines-not-interested-in-aer-lingus.html)):

National carrier Turkish Airlines' chief executive Temel Kotil said today that his company did not plan to buy Aer Lingus.

"The EU does not favour a company outside the union holding a majority stake. There isn't a liberal market there, our path for inorganic growth in the EU is currently blocked," Kotil said at a conference in Istanbul....
