Do you have any miles you could use? Skymiles or anything from Star Alliance? Availability is high at any time. There are several options with TG, CI, even KE or OZ with ICN stopover.

Try China Airlines (CI). I just checked on CI web site: RT US$ 594 and OW $ 388, departing in one month. Try CI web site but it is not easy to use.

You probably can get it cheaper by using a local TA but you need to pay cash to make it worthwhile.

this flight usually gets much cheaper if willing to take a one stop.

Plenty of options via HKG and China just a matter of if you need the $$ or the time more.

You can always try to go thru CX or TG's websites. Don't look for fares within Asia thru ITA as published fares only exist thru them. Asian airlines have their own deals. You may also try Zuji.com which is an offshoot arm of Travelocity in Asia and they might have fares from Taiwan.

Thanks - I guess I should look at their local websites (with google translate) ?

For many years, Rt fares between Taipei and Bangkok was less than US$300 year-round, due to the daily KLM 747direct flights between the two cities. But KLM had stopped flying this route since March. The average fares naturally goes up. But I check the latest fares on Kayak.com, the Rt fares of Hongkong Airlines (one stop) are always in the US$400 range. I don't know whether this is the expensive fares you were talking about?

In Chinese but you can get a good idea:

http://www.eztravel.com.tw/ezec/freefit/ec_fit_main_query.jsp?city_from=TPE&city_to=BKK&promotion_no=&ticket_type=R&service_type=1&ticket_class_section=1&international_cd=&searchBegDate=&orderBy=0&priceRange=&fit=md

http://ea.ezfly.com/ProdSearch/WAIR/#search\trip=RT&type=&al=&from=TAY&to=BKK&dt=&rt=

Prices are in NT$ and do not include taxes, insurance and surcharges.

TPE-HKG-BKK -> 1550 miles
TPE-BKK -> 1547 miles

straight line it maybe but hanging around in HKG will mean at least an extra 2 hrs to you journey on a good day

Go through the airline's local websites. You can get it for around $300/ RT.
Dragon Air, China Airlines, Thai Airways.
Good Luck.

The OP is price sensitive. Therefore having to make a connection is likely of much lesser importance - particularly as (s)he reacted enthusiastically to the 2-separate-tickets-via-Manila suggestion!
