United MileagePlus (Consolidated) - Two different Itin, possible problems?

Hi, I have searched online although I have not seen an answer that was after 3/3.

Say I buy two different tickets, one is a short hop AAA-BBB and the other has two connections BBB-CCC-DDD ,so..

AAA-BBB BBB-CCC-DDD (which is all in the same day & all domestic flights)

Am I able to check the bag through from AAA-DDD without having to go to baggage claim and recheck at BBB?
Also what would happen if there seems to be a cancellation or mechanical problem at AAA or BBB would I have to pay a fee because BBB-CCC-DDD is still operating? or could an agent be understanding and change the flight or date?

Many Thanks!

I don't know, but seems unlikely that bags could be checked all the way through on on different PNR. Perhaps United could combine the PNR into a single itinerary.

I gotta ask, why so much flying in one day, almost seems like a mileage run.

With so much flying, and as you pointed out, chances of some irregualr operations somewhere down the line, the chances of your luggage arriving on the luggage belt at your final destination, even if they do let you check it all the way through seems to be fair at best.

Consider sending it ahead a couple of days ahead to the city of your final destination using FedEx or UPS ground. Domestically, it should be comparable to the extra checked baggage fee you are trying to avoid.

Well, its actually a vacation but its a lot cheaper if I book it this way instead of just AAA-DDD, also im a Premier Silver Member so checking in a bag is free. I wanted to avoid going through the hassle of rechecking in a bag at BBB, although with a 2 hour connection I should still be ok with doing so right?

No prob UA checking bags through two separate itineraries. It's done all the time. No need to recheck. And no, UA can't combine the itineraries into one PNR.

That said, I don't know how it works with fees (if applicable). As a silver, the OP gets one bag free (as he/she stated). But if there are additional bags, is the fee doubled? Probably the official answer is "yes," though who knows what would happen in reality.

The OP should also ask at check-in whether a more direct routing is possible.

OP, if u miss a flight in the sequence u will be rebooked on the next available flight for free. (Heck, you'll probably even get a more direct routing, but don't say I told you to do that)

If AAA-BBB-DDD is cheaper, why not just book it that way as a single reservation? As bad as the old Continental.com site is, it should figure out the fare breaks correctly.

Assuming the fare is combinable (they usually are but sometimes they're not). This is common for intra-Europe flights, you sometimes see it in Hawaii, and you can find it elsewhere as well.

That's why I don't like it when posters try to mask their cities. That tactic makes sense if you're proposing something shady where you don't want the airline to figure out who you are. But on a baggage interline question, there's nothing sketchy about that.

In this case, we don't know if all the flights in question are UA operated, and that changes things. For example, if AAA-BBB is an inter-island HA flight, they will not allow interline baggage across separate tickets. Or if AAA is a small neighbor island (e.g., MKK), they don't have USDA services every day so you can't through check on certain days at times even if the carrier is cooperative. Or if it's an intra-Europe flight, the baggage concept changes if it's on a separate ticket. Or in some countries, there are residency restrictions on cheap local fares.

By masking the cities, a lot of FT value gets lost, and the value of response is generic at best.

What do you mean by baggage concept? Are you referring to piece versus weight concept?

Yes.

Yes.
Well I can't speak for all airlines, but I know for sure that LX and LH, and I'm pretty sure all integrated M&M airlines have eliminated the weight concept on all flights, and moved exclusively to the piece concept (like in the US)
