Hi there,

So I have departed already (1 month ago) and am due on my return flight tomorrow. Out of curiousity, I wondered if I would be able to change my economy ticket so I could come back at a later date.

My e-ticket reads (figures are about correct):

Change: Change is permitted (fee £50)

You will pay an administration fee of £10 when you change your ticket via telephone. If you change your ticket online via Manage my Booking no administration fee will be charged.

I go to manage my booking on the KLM website and the £50 change fee turns into about £300 with a 'fare adjustment fee', plus tax added on, which I was expecting, but certainly not that much.

Does anyone know if i'll be able to get it cheaper over the phone?

Appreciate help

No, it won't be cheaper over the phone. Your original fare will have been a cheap fare, and there is only a limited number of those available on each flight, and once they've run out (usually several weeks before departure) your only choice is to upgrade to a more expensive fare.

So - if you wanted to move your return date by several months you'd probably end up paying nothing more than the change fee, but if you want to get a different flight at short notice you have to pay the difference between the fare you paid and the cheapest fare now available for that flight.

thanks for the help.

unfortunately the ticket originally booked wasn't cheap since it was booked 2 days prior to departing :D . I'll have a look around and play with some dates online but it does seem to be a bit more than I would have liked!

thanks again

Yes but that simply means that your outbound (2 days after you were buying the ticket) was most certainly the expensive part. The return a month later may well have booked into a very cheap bucket and Aviatrix gave you the right explaination for the source of your £300 difference to pay.
