Checkpoints and Borders Policy Debate - House bill extends TSA intel sharing to mass transit

The Transportation Security Administration already shares intelligence it collects with airports. Now a House bill would expand TSA's intel sharing to local mass transit systems as well.

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), the bill's sponsor, said the legislation is a "common sense approach" to fighting terrorism. The House passed the bill May 30 and the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs is now considering the bill.

In an interview with The Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Emily Kopp, Speier said the bill creates "fusion centers" where TSA can provide intel to local law enforcement and emergency management officials.

Intelligence and the TSA are mutually exclusive.

What would mass transit do with such data? Most mass transit systems are struggling to find money just to keep operating basic services.

When did TSA get any intelligence?

:D

The title brought to mind the quote:

"Military intelligence is a contradiction in terms."

Groucho Marx

With TSA it is apparent they started from zero, and have remained there.

This is similar to the crap Sheila Jackson Lee is pulling on Houston Bus Systems. Yes more police officers to stop criminals before they start. We are all guilty now. Boo hoo.

Since when did TSA become an intelligence agency? Why are they sharing intel with anyone - why isn't the intel being coordinated with the FBI, which is the agency that's supposed to be investigating and stopping terrorism in the US? Or local law enforcement agencies, which are the ones who are supposed to be patrolling mass transit?

TSA seems to think it's the Thin Blue Line between us and total annihilation by terrists. As an agency, it has become the ultimate Mall Ninja.

"Common sense approach to fighting terrorism," huh? Nice one Jackie - but how many terrist attacks have there been in California in the last decade? How many in the entire US?

More to the point, how many terrist attacks have there been on US mass transit, EVER? So few, I can't even think of any right now, unless you count Bernie Goetz.

After one day that was stopped due to the public outcry.
There is a thread on it here and you can google the media stories out of Houston. It lasted a day...but SJL is still a moron...

Hey, it takes an elaborate system for all those smoke and mirrors to work together.

There wont be much sharing going on here! That is probably a good thing for the general public. If this organization can't even make sure a WTMD is plugged in at JFK, what level
Of intelligence do you think they will have to share?
