Does anyone have any experience with the two properties there in terms of gold upgrades? If I book a basic room, outside of canton fair times in late august, how likely to get an upgrade to exec room?

Upgrades are awesome in this hotel... I am in love with this property and its staff.
However, having said that I am not a fan of dying in a fire. The other day a floor caught on fire and no alarms, bells or whistles where heard. I was coming back from a shopping trip and this strange smell like paper was on fire caught my attention and I got pretty scared. I asked the bell boy in the fire and he was clue less about any fire. Then, it just so happened the elevator stopped at the smoke filled flood and the stench ran into the elevator making the rest of the trip to the 24th floor a pretty uncomfortable experience.
The day after, I woke up with a terrible cough and was ill for two days.
I wish that the hotel would have shut down the elevators and perhaps the floors where the smoke had leaked, but it was not done and I have to say I am not happy with security measures in place for Guest Safety but it was completely ignored in this case. I wonder why.
Other than this, this is the best Hilton in Asia!

As said, the Tianhe location always upgrade gold to exec floor privileges. Rooms are lovely and modern. Exec lounge is very nice. I have not had any issues with my stays there. My boss stays there every month (as a Diamond) and has no complaints.
