New York City - Anyone want to visit the Statue of Liberty, Friday PM 6/29?

Just thought I'd put this out there, in case any locals or other visitors are interested.

I'll be visiting NYC next week and am registered to do the Statue of Liberty swim on Friday 6/29:
http://www.nycswim.org/Event/Event.aspx?Event_ID=2204

They'll be closing most of Liberty Island early that day for this event. However, those participating get to explore the island before/after and can also get guest passes for others to do so. My main thing is just to finish the swim (a whopping 1200m), so I get bragging rights for years to come and can tell people, "I swam around the Statue of Liberty." They could always use kayakers and others to assist with the event. There's a cookout afterwards, which will include hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, veggie burgers, etc. (the swim around Manhattan is this weekend, and there's many other swimming events in the NYC area, such as the 8 Bridges swim, if you're interested).

Let me know if you're interested in being a guest at the event. They haven't yet specified how many guest passes each participant can get, but so far I only have 1 guest. The event starts at 6:30 pm, so work really isn't an excuse, especially if you work in the Financial District (the boat leaves from South Ferry).

Also--if anyone would like to assist with something special my partner and I are planning, on either July 2 or 3, please check this thread I posted in the GLBT forum:

(you can reply here, there, or PM me)

Thanks!

OP, please check for a recent thread so you are aware you cannot enter the Statue as it is closed for repairs.

Otherwise, congratulations and best wishes on your engagement and good luck for the swim.

Thanks for the info. I just went to the Statue of Liberty last year, so it isn't a huge deal (went up to the top of the pedestal). It was tough last year, after running a half marathon the day before ;)

Still waiting on info from NYC swim, but if anyone wants a trip to Liberty Island Friday night, give me a shout.

And I'll probably be back in Sep for the Little Red Lighthouse swim (a 10k), if anyone would like to be on a boat or kayak (you can throw me a water and/or snack), let me know (I'd swim with someone who's done several swimming 10k+):

OP, sounds like you're in pretty great shape for these events so you have to plan on coming back once the crown has reopened. Unlike me, you'd probably do the whole climb nonstop and never even need to catch your breath. :)

Good luck on the swim, aztimm! Is the famed swim around Manhattan on the horizon?

Thanks dstan! I finished 23rd (out of about 400), in a much better time than I expected. However, one guy I chatted with afterward (who said he is the finance editor of the New York Times), said he took a few breaks, did some butterfly and backstroke, just enjoying the views. It was only a 1200m swim also.

Not sure about the swim around Manhattan... That's a bit on the crazy side, right now I'm still enjoying things. I swam from Brighton Beach (near Coney Island) over to Manhattan Beach on Sunday, which was quite interesting...all the people over at that beach seemed surprised when I suddenly appeared out of the water.

Otherwise, we did a whirlwind tour of NYC...in addition to the Liberty Island swim, here's a few things we did:
* Guggenheim Museum
* WTC/Sep 11 Memorial
* show: "Jesus Christ Superstar"
* NBC studio tour
* MET
* Coney Island (my other half went to the aquarium while I swam)
* MOMA
* show: "Peter and the Starcatcher"
* and a little wedding to finish the trip

This is pic we took just before the swim (and it was my left side view most of the time):

and this was my view for about the middle 1/3 of the swim:

Great job!

Remember, the swim around Manhattan is tide-assisted! :cool:
