New England - The best things to do between Boston-CT-NYC-PA

My fiance is flying over for a week from London, and she's never been to the east coast.

So I figured, I could do a road-trip- Boston-hartford-NYC-Philadelphia-Washington DC.

And I'm trying to squeeze in the best of everything. Once she finishes her doctorate, she plans to move here anyway, so she is going to get more chances to explore New England properly.

But I was hoping for suggestions for some rare treats along the way that are not usually advertised on the travel websites.

This is gist of what I've come up with so far-


Boston- Quincy, the boat ride along the coastline, Freedom Trail, Cambridge.
CT- Hartford, Mark Twain's house, Groton-USS Nautilus, Mystic- the aquarium.
NYC- the usual- Central Park, Times Square, SoHo, United nations, Statue of Liberty.
(6 flags and Atlantic city if time permits)
Philadelphia- a whole bunch of museums, the rocky steps at the Museum of Art, Liberty bell, Philadelphia Cheese steak,
A visit to Centralia (the place Silent Hill is based on)
Skydiving (Groupon deal bought)
Washington DC- Smithsonian museums, White House, Lincoln Memorial (that entire area), Georgetown.


I'd appreciate any suggestions and ideas to places worth checking out or things worth doing.

In Bristol is Lake Compounce Amusement Park. It is a small park. The nation's Oldest Park. A few good roller coasters last time I was back up north. Outside the road that leads in is ESPN

How about explore the Amish culture? Lancaster County is about an hour west of Philadelphia. Might be worth looking into.

Little hint of knowledge, most of those "Amish" running the tours are actually Mennonites. And to you really uneducated people, Mennonites are not Amish. lol

We're going to be super busy in Philadelphia. Sight seeing one day then Sky diving the next and then a visit to Centralia too...

Anything interesting towards that (centralia) side of PA??

What kind of people are you? You have 1 week with your fiancé on the east coast and you're going to take her on a whirl wind tour that includes CENTRALIA? Why not throw Camden in there...at least you can see the Battleship NJ.

(I am trying to be funny. It sounds like you've got a lot packed in there. 6 Flags Great Adventure is awesome. I never knew how good I had it growing up near there.)

If you like hot dogs, and your route from Hartford has you on I 84, and it's not a Friday, Blackies in Cheshire, Ct right off the highway is a great place for a couple of dogs. Birch beer on tap, home made spicy relish, been that way for decades.

Walter's (http://waltershotdogs.com/) in Mamaroneck, NY is also worth stopping by if you're having a hankering for a good hot dog.

While route 2 would be the likely choice from Hartford to Groton, consider a detour down rt 9 to Gilette Castle in East Haddam.

Haha! Well she said that she wanted to see some of the touristy stuff and some more... And when I asked her what she meant by "more"...She said..Well surprise me. ;)

This should be surprising enough. She also has no idea that we're going sky-diving. :D

I'm really hoping to squeeze 6 Flags in. Let's hope we can do it. I may have to cancel some stuff off of her list.:p

Not a huge hot dog person :) But I haven't decided on the route we're going to take, so if we do head down that way, I'll stop by! ^

Personally, I would skip Atlantic City. The only thing unique is that the casinos are right on the beach. But the casinos are casinos and the beach is the beach and there is nothing unique about either.

Already have. and for that reason exactly. I'm actually trying to fit 6 flags in. :D
