New York City - Has anyone tried the $20 sandwich trick successfully in NYC?

I'll be staying at one of the Marriott hotels in Manhattan (I haven't decided yet)

And I was just wondering if anyone has had any success with trying the $20 trick in New York?

I've used it to great success in Vegas, but I've been told that $20 would be insufficient for Manhattan. :(

Also- there is a good chance, I may be able to get the rooms booked through Marriott Rewards points. I've heard of people getting their "comped" rooms upgraded in Vegas, so if this trick does in fact work in NYC, would it work on a room booked with points?

"Sandwich?" Are you talking about "bribing" the front desk clerk for an upgrade?

In that case, I would say to make it at least $50 depending on the hotel. In a place like the Four Seasons or the Mandarin Oriental, $20 probably buys a drink at the bar.

Try it and report back.

Back when reservations were tough to get at DBGB, the jackass in front of me slipped $100 to the maître d' and stole my table. Admittedly not a perfect comparison, but I wouldn't expect $20 to get you very far. I'd also suspect that a NYC Marriott has more controls over its reservation system than a gastropub.

I think the joke is on the other guy. DBGB is not (and never was) worth a $100 bribe for a table.
