As I did not have a stay with Hilton so far this year.. how comes ?

It's an IT glitch. I've done4 stays thus far but my counter still says 4 more stays.

Their counter has to have a glitch in it. I requalified for Diamond towards the end of January just on my Am Ex spend and it always shows how many nights, stays, points I need to requalify even though I requalified 5 months ago

I had the same typo on my account. Thinking it was some sort of promo, I changed a recent 3 night stay to 3 different Hilton hotels. Unfortunately, it still says I am 4 stays away from Gold. (or 33 nights...) I am disappointed.

Many thanks for pointing me to the other thread !
But just wow.. so the possibilities are:
a) the counter is plain wrong and will not change when I stay
b) the counter is plain wrong and will rise if I stay
c) the counter is right and will update to " XX more stays until diamond".. if I stay..
Me thinks that maybe not LH has got the worlds worst IT..

For those of you who see this bogus counter, where is it?
After I log in, my Account Summary on the left just shows:
sdsearch
HHonors #: xxxxxxxxx
HHonors Gold
lots of TOTAL POINTS
Qualifying Summary what's this?
Stays Completed: 6
Nights Completed: 11
Base Points: not so many
I see nothing to show my progress toward either requalifying or toward qualifyihng to a higher level (Diamond).
If I knew when my current status expires, I could know whether I have to do the math (16 - 6 = 10 more stays needed), or not worry about it (if my status is good through 3/2014, it won't make a difference to my Gold status continuing what I do until next January). I got my current Gold status via MVP Fast Track in April, and per another post in another thread, apparently that may be good through 3/2014. So is that why I don't have a counter? (Except I don't remember a counter from before either.)

if you go to the new website www3.hilton.com, in the top right it asks you to log in. If you do it here, without going to the HHonors website, it will have a counter of how many nights. stays and points are still needed to keep your status. It is not available in the "My Account" section.

Oh, ok, now I see. What a whole useless section. Besides giving the counter wrong, there's a confusing bar that tries to show you where you are but to me it seems messed up too.
I have:

Same here, it says I need 58 stays for Plat, I have done 2 so far, 4 more to come in the next few months.
I also signed up for the MVP 4 stays thing and have done 1/4 stays so far.
Should it be saying 3 more stays to gold?
Would it be stupid of me to call them and check that I am registered for the MVP thing?

The way status is awarded has changed. It used to be on a rolling year (stays in a rolling 12 month period and then status to the end of the first qtr of the following calendar year). Now the stays are counted in a calendar year.
You need 4 stays to get silver, 16 stays to get gold and 28 to get diamond. When you have reached a status level, you keep that for the rest of the calendar year and then the whole of the next year.
So, I got gold in 2011 and get to keep it for the whole of 2012. The stays that I make in 2012 are effectively determining what my status will be in 2013. So, if I only make between 4 and 15 stays in 2012, I will drop, on Jan 1 2013 to silver. If I stay 16-27 nights in 2012, I will be gold in 2013 and 28 + gets me diamond for all of 2013.
The only thing that changes status in the year is if you rise to a new level. So me, being gold now (on the strength of my 2011 stays), if I have 28 stays in 2012, as soon as my 28th stay posts, I go up to diamond and stay there for the rest of the year and the whole of the next.
So, unless there is something that I've misunderstood, anyone who is gold now (June 2012) and will make less than 16 stays in 2012 by dec 31 2012 will not be gold on Jan 1 2013 (unless they get there via some credit card deal)
My counter is correct by the way. I actually made more reservations than stays - on a couple of occasions, I extended a stay with a second reservation and had sneakily thought that this might be a separate stay. Hilton say not - if you stayed in the hotel on consecutive nights, that's one stay. Once you know, it's clear enough and I won't raise my hopes again!!!

No, I think this is incorrect. If you had gold by April 1, 2012 it will expire March 31, 2013. For 2013 Gold status after April 1, 2013 you must have 16 stays or the nights qualifications (28) from Jan.1-Dec. 31, 2012.
However, if you earn Gold after April 1, 2012, you will keep it the rest of 2012 an all of 2013 and it will expire March 31, 2014. However, April 1, 2014 in order to maintain your Gold status you must have made your 16 stays or nights (28) qualification from Jan. 1 - Dec. 31, 2013.
Hope that makes sense.

Stays spending is from January to December. One you earn the status or requalify you have it for the rest of the year, all of the next year and through March 31 of the following year.
So if you earned gold anytime in 2012, you should be gold through March 31, 2014 regardless of if you qualified on January 5 or December 30 of 2012.

If you earn before March 31 then when you requal. on March 31/April 1 you will only requal for 1 year. So, it would expire the following year on March 31.
Did you read something different in the terms and conditions? Maybe I have misread something along the way.

Hilton HHonors Terms and Conditions (http://hhonors1.hilton.com/en_US/hh/terms.do):
Earning Tier Status
Effective January 1, 2009, Members can earn and maintain Elite tier status based on stays, nights, or Base Points earned in any calendar year. A "calendar year" is understood to mean January 1st through - December 31st of each year. Members must re-qualify for Elite status each calendar year.
and
Maintaining Your Elite Tier
Once the Member has reached a certain Elite tier, the Member may keep such status for the calendar year in which the Elite tier was earned and the subsequent calendar year...
That tier year will actually end the following March 31, so the subsequent calendar year and three months is more accurate.
In the OP's instance,
Gold Elite Membership
Hilton HHonors Gold Elite membership will be awarded to Members with 16 stays, 36 nights or 60,000 Base Points earned during any calendar year. A "night" is a night that is part of a "stay," as that term is defined herein. Base Points earned will count toward Gold Elite tier qualification. Bonus Points earned on Base Points do not count toward Elite tier qualification.

The qualifying period is the calendar year. Stays, points, nights, credit card spending for 2012 are for status for the 2013. You keep status for the entire year of 2013 and the first three months of 2014. It doesn't matter if you earned the status on January 2 or December 30 of 2012, you will have it through March 31, 2014.
I would have requalified for Diamond in late January (probably technically around February 20 when my am ex statement closed) and my diamond status should be good through March 31, 2014.
I'm really not sure why Hilton gives you three extra months. Delta does the same thing, you status expires either 3/1 or 4/1 of the following year if you don't requalify

sorry, I dont understand where to find the "tier year ends March 31" in the Hilton T&Cs. I know that used to be the system but my understanding that its all on calendar years now. If I have it wrong, sorry but I still stand by what I said previously, my understanding is that status ends at the end of the calendar year following qualification unless you re-qualify. To me, (and I admit, I may be the stupid one here) the T&Cs are clear about defining a calendar year as Jan to Dec

Your status is good through 3/31 of the following year. If you are currently a silver and you qualify for gold in July of this year, you will be gold till at leat 3/31/14 (the remainder of 2012, all of 2013 and through 3/31/14). In 2013 if your activity goes down and you only qualify for silver, on 4/1/14 your status will drop to silver and you will be silver until 3/31/15 (unless you qualify for gold or diamond again).
Not sure why Hilton gives you the extra three months of status instead of ending it on 12/31. I realize some people may requalify on a december stay that won't post until January, but just have the status expire on 1/31. Only other thing I can think of is if Hilton wants to do fast tracks the first quarter.
Delta is the same way. Your medallion stataus expires on 2/28. There's been several comments made in the Delta forum that 3/1 is the best day to get upgrades because a lot of people lose their status on 2/28.
