Our first visit to Melbourne and not sure where to stay. It is very unusual to see the Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt being virtually the same price. What is the story? Will use a Diamond Suite Upgrade for this stay and use of the club lounge has always been important. Can anyone who has been there recently weigh in with suggestions. Thank you!

If you read the Master threads for both hotels, you will find more than enough answers to the above question.

Grand Hyatt is superior to the Park.

In terms of club service, quality and the size of the Suite's Room, Grand Hyatt Melbourne is better than Park Hyatt Melbourne. However, in terms of the Suite Amenities, Park Hyatt Melbourne is better than GH Melbourne.

Any decent recommends on cheaper hotels that are part of a major chain?
I don't really wanna come out of pocket for more than $120/nt

Since this is not Hyatt related, I would suggest that you post this question over in the Australia (Destinations) forum - http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/oceania-australia-new-zealand-south-pacific-461/ .

Grand Hyatt is superior to the Park.
Some others including myself disagree about this. Diamond treatment is far superior at the Park Hyatt compared to Grand Hyatt.

An option may be to stay at the Radisson Flagstaff Gardens hotel using the friends and family rate (~$80).
Had a very pleasant stay here when I was in Melbourne last year.

I just returned from the PH and thoroughly enjoyed it. Their lounge is first class, the gym is great, and generally a very elegant hotel. If you appreciate the little upgrades, wood panels, inlaid marble, nespresso coffee machine, etc. this is the place. I did pop into the GH and I will say their bar/restaurant scene is more appealing, but did not check out their lounge or suites. The GH location is better (in the city) but then I would have missed out on the view of the Cathedral from my corner suite. With the wife, or for a leisure stay, i would still pick the PH for sure. Alone for business and the rates equal, I might try the GH.

I'm not sure about your dates, but I used Priceline for Melbourne in early August and got the Marriott for $125 a night.

Just stepped out of PH, and it was great. Interior and location wise it wasn't as nice as GH, but the service made it up for the loss. I will try GH next time in town.

I'm in the same boat but having stayed at the PH before I choose the GH . From reading its recent refurb and I found catching the tram down into the city everyday was not only cold but a bit of a time waster.
I used a suite upgrade at the PH and got the lovely terrace suite with the spa and aqua tv , both properties have the free time rate when I'm going so it was about even for a 3 night stay so I decided to try something new. the lounge access and offerings are important to me I have a family of 4 to feed , not sure about the child policy in GH but PH wasn't a problem.
Does anyone know if there's a child policy at the GH ?
I will report back in 5 weeks
