Hi,
I recently applied for a US Airways Mastercard from Barclays.
On the application link, it said I will get two complimentary companion tickets. What I received was one Companion Certificate valid for up to two companions.
Does this mean I cannot use this certificate on two roundtrips for two people (I will pay my full fare)? To get the maximum benefit, I should use it on one roundtrip for three people? Can any one please confirm.
Thanks.

Precisely.
So, yeah, their maximum value is when you have a trip that you need to make as a threesome and the tickets are on the high side. The good news is that you don't have to wait to find special seats released to use them. My strategy has thus been to hold them back at the beginning of the year in case there is a short-notice family-emergency type trip and then, assuming no such bad luck, just book a vacation thing-y that would not have done otherwise at 3-at-top-dollar plane ticket prices. The other great use is when you have a trip scheduled to some place far and fun on someone else's dime, and can get two tag-alongs at next to nothing (can make for a crowded hotel room, though:D).

How does this work? I thought the certs had at least a 14 day advance purchase requirement.

I don't think it says that anywhere on the application link. From the Terms and Conditions:
"Companion Certificate: The Primary Cardmember is eligible to receive one companion certificate valid for two $99 companion tickets."

Good point -- I should have been more specific. Not good for last last minute travel.
