Looking at YYZ-HKG-YYZ from mid-December, returning around the end of the first week of January. Prices seem to be around the CAD 2400.00 mark for economy with some days as high as 2800+. I've never paid more than about CAD 1400.00 for economy, but assume this higher price is due to it being somewhat of a peak travel season. Can you offer any advice based on your experience? Is it worth waiting to see if prices drop? Would a travel agent have access to lower fares? Or is it just the way prices are around xmas?

It is higher by $550 depending on the flight days as compared to previous Christmas travel season. By the trends becasue of reduced flights, the fares may not drop much but then this depends on the price of oil also.
The high price is directly connected to the School/university holidays. For example as soon as those start, prices drop significantly. by travelling mid December coming back to YYZ early January, you are flying in the very busy Christmas holiday season. Prices will be very high, and will not come down.
