Does anyone know if Edinburgh is a walkable city or would one need a taxi to get around? Does Edinburgh have a subway system?
U.K. and Ireland - Public transport system in EdinburghView Full Version : Public transport system in Edinburgh Noveluver Jun 20, 12, 2:24 pm Does anyone know if Edinburgh is a walkable city or would one need a taxi to get around? Does Edinburgh have a subway system? alanR Jun 20, 12, 2:36 pm VERY Walkable, 90% of anything you would likely to want to see is within 15 minutes walk of Princes Street, it also has a good bus system run by Lothian Buses. No subway - just the (*!%£$ trams. I've never heard of a UK city where a taxi would be needed to get around. Jenbel Jun 20, 12, 4:11 pm There are a number of people who live or who have lived in Edinburgh hang out on this forum, so I'd hope someone would know - of course we don't get many tourists so I doubt anyone else would know ;) It's very self contained, but very hilly. Best best could be to get day tickets, which let you hop on and hop off buses all day long... The bus service is really excellent, and all fares are fixed price (£1.40 per journey - day tickets are £3.50, you can buy on board, but have the exact change). Taxis are expensive. Local bus company info (route maps etc) http://lothianbuses.com/ Fare info: http://lothianbuses.com/fares-and-tickets/day-time.html 45128 Jun 21, 12, 4:26 am Are Lothian Bus - in and around Edinburgh - wheelchair accessible, please? EDIT: Please disregard; I broke my own rule and did not bother to search on line before I asked! :o stut Jun 21, 12, 4:28 am Indeed they are. http://lothianbuses.com/what-we-do/easy-access.html 45128 Jun 21, 12, 4:30 am Indeed they are. http://lothianbuses.com/what-we-do/easy-access.html Jings (note the use of local argot!)! That was quick. Thank you, stut. Prospero Jun 21, 12, 5:04 am To echo shut, all buses in Edinburgh are accessible. That said, what with the rough suspension, savage breaks, cobbled braes and lack of convenient egress, I recommend you take a tight hold of the grab rail until the vehicle makes a complete halt at your bus stop. We wouldn't want you to end up in a wheelchair ;) Syme Jun 21, 12, 6:29 am Echoing what was said above really, but Edinburgh has one of the best bus systems in the UK. Lothian Buses are frequent-ish, reliable, decent value and wheelchair accessible (including most of the tour buses I think). Taxis are not cheap at all! And it's such a walkable place that really there isn't much call for a taxi. Don't even ask about the trams, you'll just get an earful from some irate local! 45128 Jun 21, 12, 7:02 am To echo shut, all buses in Edinburgh are accessible. We wouldn't want you to end up in a wheelchair ;) Actually, it's not for me. A disabled friend of mine has had rather a rough time recently and I was thinking of treating him to an "away day" in Edinburgh. But many thanks to all who took the time and the trouble to respond! ^^^^^ Don't even ask about the trams, you'll just get an earful from some irate local! We live in Croydon, so we are really spoiled in that respect! tentseller Jun 21, 12, 7:04 am VERY Walkable, 90% of anything you would likely to want to see is within 15 minutes walk of Princes Street, ... We did a one day walking around in May 2012 and saw almost all the major sites ... It's very self contained, but very hilly. ... Yes to that, It will not be the distance but the uphill walks that would be tiring. ... Don't even ask about the trams, you'll just get an earful from some irate local! Made that mistake at lunch and got an hour worth of opinions about the tram etc. |
