I wasn't successful in doing so. Arrived late on CM after the UIO poop-bath and robbery, and I didn't feel as empowered as I normally do. I succumbed to the outrageous rate to Bavaro.
The following day, on the way back, I thought to heck with this and used the motohoncho. The cost was $8 instead of almost $40. The driver put my new case on the gas tank and all was well...except that he didn't know the way to the airport.
Also, he didn't realize that the airport approaches are under the guardianship of this cabal and its allies.
Even I, the gaijin, knew he should not drop me directly in front of the terminal since he wasn't a member of the taxi cabal and I thought the policia would no doubt enforce loading restrictions for non-approved transport. I told him to stop and let me off, but seeing the terminal, he ignored my request to drop me 200m away, at the loop road turn. So it proved. I made check in while he was being questioned by the policia.
This airport is rather remote and the chances of finding a motohoncho going the other way, from the airport, seem faint.
