DiningBuzz! - Deli Turkey, Yes or no?

In the Club sandwich thread and some others too, it seems many eschew deli style formed turkey. Am I the only one who greatly prefers a quality thin sliced smoked or roasted (think Saags or better) deli turkey 'loaf' product for cold sandwiches over 'real' sliced turkey breast? I will eat real turkey breast sandwiches occasionally as a way to use leftovers, but I would never ever order one.

quality is in the eye of the beholder. Many consumers like Subway meats which is mostly water held in the meat slurry by carageenan which is a seaweed derivative that holds 27 times it's weight in water. So crap in my opinion.

I too prefer a high quality (read whole muscle) turkey deli product when making & dining on a club sandwich. UNLESS the real turkey is sliced thin & is moist but most places let the breast get dry so that's why I prefer a high quality deli turkey.

I'm reminded of Lee's Deli in SF's FiDi that carves turkey to order for their sandwiches. Same with Jan's, right next to my office in Menlo Park. Sometimes a bit dry, but between the fresh dutch crunch bread, a few slices of avocado and a dollop of mayo, I hardly notice.

If I have to do deli turkey, I prefer smoked. Seems less watery and has more flavor.

Give me a real slice of real turkey any day. Oh, and I do make myself one every day... Lately, I've found that Save Mart has REAL sliced turkey instead of the swirled and formed stuff (which I don't really savor but eat it anyway) and I love it.

To me, the packaged turkey meat products have two major drawbacks; texture and flavor. Other than that, they're fine.;) Pressed formed meat just doesn't have the right "mouth feel." It's like chewing on some sort of gelatinous goo. And these products, especially the "smoked" ones seem to have a "chemical" taste.

Of course that's just me. My cat loves OM honey baked ham. Won't eat other varieties, only the honey baked. Get it on sale, separate it into several/many little pouches which are frozen and defrosted as needed for treats. He also likes really good, very rare roast beef, but at something like $20/lb he don't get that too often.

Both of which, while worthy contenders for "best deli meat", would be nasty substitutes on a turkey and avocado sandwich. :D

Personally I love both. Especially after Thanksgiving when there's a couple Zip Lock bags of leftover turkey in the fridge and they make for the most delightful sandwiches. Wish I had one right now!

Does the deli roast the turkey? Does it smoke the turkey? You might not realize how good it is if the store prepares it.

When I see the Boar's Head label, I'll get the turkey. The Maple Honey turkey is especially delicious.

I found it the best sandwich in the city. due to its quality and the Korean lady, who works here, makes your sandwiches one at a time and they're absolutely fresh. The bad thing is there are a few tables and its very hard to find a place of your choice. Overall the place is best for lunch and the services are top notch as well.

Not a fan of turkey in general, but I do eat it on Thanksgiving. Even then it must be accompanied with cornbread dressing and whole-berry cranberry sauce.

The wife is a fan though and she prefers real turkey breast over the deli turkey when it comes to sandwiches; although she will condescend to eating Low Sodium Boar's Head turkey breast if it sliced thickly enough.

I hate avocados, so I would never be looking for a deli meat that pairs with it.

Ditto. I just don't like turkey, especially on sandwiches. It just brings nothing to the party, so it's pretty much all bread to me.

There's always a BLT. All the joys of a club without the distractions of extraneous slices of toast or dried out turkey.
