It's middle of the week and there's not THAT much traffic between HK and TPE (comparing to the amount of widebody flying that route is astonishing)

Nothing surprising

For YYZ-HKG, It's still dominating that people fly back to asia, 77W Premium Y has only been on sell for a while only so it's not surprising it goes out not that filled

Although, during booking and also a few weeks ago, I called Marco Polo and they replied that "The flight is very full", also stating that it was very hard to get my redemption bookings as well as for ticket purchasing.... Is it a possibility many people cancelled? I was also waitlisted for the HKG-TPE flight which consists of my mom and I plus 2 people...... which is very very odd...

It could also be the people that purchasing cheapest avaliable ticket that are not eligible for ASR : For Toronto especially they sell bunch of super cheap ticket though travel agent / on their website that are non AM earning that's why.

BTW OLCI seat map can be different.

As you are DM I would rather chance for OP-UP to Premium Economy by OLCI early (split dilemma though wisdom here says rather take exit row Y but not middle seat PY

FYI CX 829 flying totally full (340 pax) on 18 Jun tells you how is the traffic lately, and I think they downsize from 53J configuration to 40J also cuts some supply in J seat where they may find it hard to release any seats for upgrade.

OK this is why - When OP checks the seat map, it is already less than 48 hours to departure. Therefore, the flight has been transferred to the check-in system, which marks all selected seats that has not yet checked in as "blocked." In fact, all the block seats and taken seats are "taken." The only difference is that the former has not OLCIed but the latter has. Also, as ChrisLi said some PAX buying cheap fares are not eligible for ASR (Advanced Seat Reservation), or simply do not have ASR even if eligible.

BTW OLCI seat map can be different.

Since OP took the seat map after OLCI opens, this is the OLCI seat map (in fact, the seat map may change to OLCI mode anytime between T-55 and T-48).
