Hi everyone - I've been monitoring this forum for a couple weeks but this is my first post. At any rate, I need 8,000 MQMs to maintain my GM status for 2013 on Delta. I am no longer travelling as frequently for work so have only flown about 42K this year (including rollover miles from last year). Any direction you could give me on where to build a MR out of LAX (preferably) or SAN would be great.

Do you mean SAN (San Diego) or SNA (Santa Ana/Orange County)? Either way, use ITA Matrix to look for your MR - this will help you find the routing you want and what you might expect to pay for that run. Also, are you willing to go international, or are you just looking for a domestic MR?

wouldn't hurt to look at lgb....

edit to add....no work trips for this year?.....you might want to hold off til fall when there may be lower fares....

Both San Diego or SNA would work, however, San Diego is more of a drive for me. Yes, I am willing to go international on a skyteam partner provided I can do it in roughly a weekend. Any time now - fall would work for the most part. I used to live in Minneapolis and recently moved to LA so not as familiar with the routings out here yet.

There are some nice MR from SAN to ICT on the MR deals forum. 5K MQM for around $200.

Tokyo and Osaka have been cheap from southern California for a while now. Even cheaper if you can figure out a fuel dump, as the base fares are quite low. Delta has a $153++ T fare from SNA/ONT/LGB to those two cities right now. http://www.wandr.me/Fare-Finder.aspx/Best-Fares/Los-Angeles-Intl--Los-Angeles-United-States-(LAX). MEL is also quite cheap on a CPM basis.

Your best options will be LAX and SNA. LGB only goes to SLC - which isn't bad if you're trying to position.

Best best is out of LAX. Check out ITA Matrix though: http://matrix.itasoftware.com

Found an ok MR on AZ 11/9 - 11/11 (LAX - FCO - IST) Out of LAX at 3:15pm on 11/9 and back on 11/11 at 1:20pm for $789 - trip is about 14,500 miles.

That will probably end up being my MR this year. If you use ITA Matrix though you can just play around with destination options from LAX on DL metal. Use the multi-stop option and add in the routing - when you book though, you'll most likely have to go through a phone agent, but no big deal.
