DL: LAX-MOW $652 AI, under 4.5 cpm depending on routing. Other Skyteam members at slightly higher. On DL, only flight to MOW is JFK-SVO, though some interesting domestic routings are available from LAX to JFK to get some extra miles. Dates in January at least, maybe other dates available. Don't forget to include a potential visa cost if you will need it.

Lufthansa/LH has matched, but on a K fare that earns nothing credited to UA or US.

Another MR with a Visa requirement to keep in mind....

Not my preference either, but there are a good number of people who don't need a visa or already have one (and I know Russia can be really hard for US passport holders to get). Tried to note to include the visa cost in my post.

What a load of crap...

"If I am flying to another country through Moscow do I need a transit visa?
Yes, you do. You should apply for a transit visa to the Russian Consulate showing them your air tickets to and from Moscow. They will issue your transit visa on the grounds of your tickets. Please note that a transit visa can be valid for up to 72 hours."

From http://www.russianvisa.org/faq.html#11

I found an itinerary with under 12 hours on the ground, but still to need a visa...?! :td:

If you are traveling to Moscow as a destination, I don't think a transit visa is applicable: you are not transiting Russia.

Which is why I'll be skipping DME/SVO for sometime, unless I have business purposes there.

I can assure you that citizens of Russia (and China, and Brazil and ...) experience similar "load of crap" and then some every time they consider transiting US.

I often hear about this Russian visa business, but I'm not entirely sure of the costs. Anyone know the amount? And what if you are only staying in MOW for 72 hours?

If you aren't in transit then you need a visa assuming that you are a US citizen.

$140 plus consulates have outsourced visa acceptance so another $30 = $170

ps In defense of the proposition that these countries should not require visa's despite America's requirement: it is unrealistic (and hubris) to ignore the relative proportion of AMericans who would like to emigrate there to the proportion of their nationals who would wish to immigrate here

That's the usual winter fare to MOW nothing special. Traveled to MOW many times in the last few years and CPM is great but not the best winter MR :) UA usually has a fare under $700/ ai as well.

Unless something is an incredible deal, I rarely comment on how good it is. I wouldn't book this, but if I needed/wanted to go to MOW I'd be quite happy with it. I asked recently what people wanted to see, as I was trying not to post things too high. I was told 4.5 cpm for domestic US, and 5 cpm for international. This isn't a great (or, truth be told, even good) pure MR, but there will likely be better pure MRs. And I personally don't know if I want to go to Russia in the winter; ask Napoleon, or just about anyone else who ever tried to invade Russia in history, how that turned out :D.

Just book a cheap flight on to KBP from SVO and then you can make your trip even longer and avoid the whole Russian visa thing. So long as you just transit SVO (or DME etc) you dont need a visa at all (unlike the USA) Separate tickets are fine.

Check out this page: http://www.ruscon.org/visa_dep_ENG.html

"Transit visa is required if period of stay in Russia exceeds 24 hours or a traveller needs to change the airport or terminals."

Ugg. Sounds like enormous potential for hassle...

I'll wait for another $151 RT to CPH. ;)

Overstaying your visa and becoming illegal is NOT immigration.
So this has nothing to do with immigration but reciprocation rule. How many illegal Russians VS Mexicans do you know of?

Just keep in mind that you may not even be allowed to board the plane in the US without a valid visa ;)

Yup. But American exceptionalism doesn't allow many to see the potential unfairness of that system. Just to complain about the visa requirements of other sovereign countries.

Not just China, Brazil, Russia, but most of the world except those from visa waiver eligible countries.
