Since this involves ex-A* partnerships not sure if the best place for this is BD or UA forums, however...

We have a BD-*A redemption in J hopping around Canada and US. One of the segments was on a Y-only CO route, but has now been moved to UA flight that has Y+.

Y+ is usually reserved for UA elites or payment, but should a generally J itinerary also open up those seats? Is that subject to airline policy or *A rules?

No chance as you'll be holding X class for that segment!

Yep, CMT says it's on X. I won't push too hard then :(.

Thanks.

Y or Y+ on UA? It does not really matter; hardly no difference.

Broadly agreed, but getting the four of us at the front would make it a bit nicer.

Afraid it doesn't open up E+. Basically you can get E+ if you are a United elite member, or if you pay. Your ticket is booked in normal economy, so you can either pony up whatever they are charging, hope to get E+ by not allocating a seat (may work on some flights, may also lead to some garbage seats) or put up with E-.

I have an F redemption (all UA metal from LHR-US-EZE), with a DCA-EWR Y only segment, on choosing my seats using their website I noticed that UA will let me pay an extra $9 for a better seat on that flight (classed as Y+, no other benefits)... so doesn't make any difference on class, even if you're paying even more for a ticket!

That is true even if you redeem UA own miles for the flight. If you have no status on United you will not get the Economy Plus seat for free even if you are booked in O the rest of the way.

One thing will be interesting - full Y tickets are allowed to chose Economy Plus seat upon check-in (24 hours) for free. If X will be treated as Y you might be able to change your seats to Economy Plus seat at check-in. Though I have no idea if X will be treated as Y.
