Travel Products - Bag that balances well on top of a hardshell carry-on?

Am looking for a bag that:
- Balances well on top of a hardshell carry-on.
- When not in use, collapses down to almost nothing.
for a 15 day December vacation to Salzburg, Vienna, Prague, Berlin.

What I'm thinking is...
We don't check luggage to Salzburg, which means we'll have 1 carry-on and 1 backpack each.
Then, after Salzburg, we'll be taking trains till we fly home.

After arriving in Salzburg from London Heathrow, I'll take this extra bag out of the carry-on to start accumulating dirty clothes and put things we buy in the hardshells.

There's one which immediately springs to mind; Longchamp Le Pliage folding tote (may also be called 'shopper' rather than tote)

It folds up to the size of a thick envelope and is really quite capacious, just make sure you get the large size.

Be careful buying one online, there seem to be a huge number of fakes out there.

It looks like Salzburg may be a British Midland code share, which might put you in T1 for the Heathrow-Salzburg leg which has a Longchamp "duty-free" shop. (I'll leave you to confirm your routing).

Oh, I missed the December-aspect of your flight, you sure do your forward-planning!

The reference to Terminal 1 is your departure terminal from Heathrow. If you flew that route today you would land (BA flight, ex-US) at LHR T5 then depart from LHR T1.

It may be (actually quite likely) that those flights are going to be moving to T3 or T5 by the time the winter timetable kicks in so bear that in mind. http://www.heathrowairport.com/flight-information/destinations-and-airlines shows the terminals.

From Longchamp's website, I now have the locations and phone #'s of their stores locations and "Longchamp boutiques" in each of London, Salzburg, Vienna, Prague, and Berlin!

Received an email from Longchamps indicating they now have a Longchamps boutique open in Rockefeller Center.

I have become very smitten by their bags!
