Italy - How to get from Livorno to Torre del Lago

Hi. I'll be on a cruise that docks in Livorno for the day. Instead of doing what everyone else is doing (which is going to Florence), I'd like to hit this particular beach town for a few hours.

Is there any public transportation between the two spots? Or is my best bet to rent a car for the day (economically not feasible).

Ideal itinerary would be to find a train that goes between the two towns - and do a stopover in Lucca. But don't think that's possible.

Personally I would rent a car. If you go by train get an online ticket to avoid queues and communication problems.
