oneworld - help needed to maximize AONE4 ex JNB
Jun 16, 12, 5:37 am
Am looking to book AONE4 ex JNB and want to maximize mileage - I collect on AAdvantage
I need to go to London / Chicago/ San Francisco/ Bermuda/ Wellington and want to do QF F on A380 to Syd or Mel as I believe that routing via HKG will turn it into an AONE5
so am looking at
I am concerned that there will be no F on QF to JNB before long ....
All recommendations on best ways to utilize my remaining 5 segments appreciated

You could use two sectors in europe for a long sidetrip (with proper F) from LHR to some places in the middle east (like DXB, MCT)
You could also add 2 or 3 segments in Australia - PER comes to mind.
You could also do JFK-SYD (although JFK-LAX part of it might book in J)..
No F between SYD-WLG, J is not all that great if you end up on a 737 operated by JetConnect, maybe utilize those two segments elsewhere and purchase a SYD-WLG-SYD separate to your AONE4

i've done a dummy booking adding MCT
so now is
I'm Wellington based and have done several RTWs ex Fiji when there was a great A RTW fare from there and also from Seoul and Amman more recently but am keen to visit SA and thought made sense to start my next AONE4 there
I'm always reluctant to buy separate ticket OZ to NZ as my plans often change and is easier to have the trans-Tasman leg on my RTW - so i'm very familiar with the Jetconnect 737 service - and I have to say the crew is always fantastic and the food v good and the new IFE is more than adequate for the length of flight.
I've always had trouble putting in PER and other stops in OZ as i've never quite got my head round the rules ... but maybe someone might make a suggestion ....
And I'll check out the JFK SYD via LAX etc - i've done that before when it was the same plane all the way,

You're only allowed one transcon in Australia, so having SYD and PER in the same trip uses up 3 of the 4 allowed segments, e.g. SYD-PER-ADL-SYD, or SYD-DRW-PER-MEL. If you're coming from/going to JNB from Oz, and want to use some segments to cross the Tasman, PER is for all practical purposes impossible, unless you want to purchase an extra segment or two.
On JFK-SYD, last time I looked, SYD-(LAX)-JFK on QF 107/108 was with 744 equipment the whole way; breaking the flight no. at LAX to use an A380 would use up two segments.
Note that while the MCT turnaround is a good earner, you'll be paying a ton of fuel surcharges to BA with this itinerary, and, unless you want to do JNB-xLHR-xMCT-xLHR-SFO as back-to-back-to-back segments, you'll also pay the "big" UK APD with any stopover at LHR. You might think about adding some European shorthaul segment as a sleepover after MCT and LHR. That way you'd be transiting LHR rather than stopping over.
JNB-xLHR-xMCT-oLHR-oAMS-xLHR-SFO-JFK-MIA-BDA-MIA-ORD-LAX-MEL-WLG-SYD-JNB would save you a few quid in APD, more than the cost of a hotel at AMS (or CDG, MAD, HEL...)
