Hi all,

It has got me confused for the longest time ever, but I never understand EVA's pricing system.

Does anyone know why it would be more expensive to fly in to Taiwan than to other places? (according to EVA official website: YYZ->TPE $1205, YYZ-> HKG $810, YYZ-> MNL $840)

Looking at the price departing from YVR, it shows that even with same booking class (X) the price is also lower. I guess its not base on your booking class and distance of travel, but the amount of transfer you will be making?

Thanks

I'm guessing it's because direct routes are usually more popular, so EVA load these and discount indirect flights.

Certainly this was the case for SGN-LHR return (via TPE) which was always cheaper than TPE-LHR return only (sometimes even they'd book into the same fare bucket). It is also a reason that they sometimes charge for stopovers - it prevents people subverting the system.

Tax inclusive pricing can vary because different airports charge different taxes, but usually don't charge for people passing through.

Welcome to FT! Perhaps someone with particular knowledge of these routes will have have further theories.

Pricing is not a simple game that the average consumer could ever figure out. You're forgetting that one flight will have many many sub-classes in economy, and then there's the competition, availability, airport fees, taxes, etc. If you can figure it all out, please let us all know the skinny!

I am also assuming that direct route is the main reason.

Thanks for the response. Brought up just to see if any flying expert actually knows. :)

On the subject of Eva Air ticket pricing - does anyone have any tips for finding lower fares? Or perhaps tell me what in the world I'm doing wrong?

I was looking at fares for NRT-TPE or TPE-HKG in July and it was pulling up ~$1000 and $400 (USD) respectively, and that was only in Y.?!?!?!

Maybe check out their HOT-E-FARES. They're usually get cheaper the closer you get to the date. You'll have to join Evergreen Club 1st to purchase. Why Eva ? Why don't you Kayak it and compare ? wj

AFAIK, the EVA website suffers from schizophrenia when pricing. Sometimes fllighhts do not even exist. Sometimes they are 2X what I would expect.

I just ignore it when it does this, and try again later. I do have plenty of flexibility, so that might make it easier for me.

BTW, I have never seen any of the "HOT E FARES" that are as good as what I find by just searching around. They are OK, but not the best.

If you say so. I'm not real current with Hot-E-Fares. I used to fly Deluxe-Elite and I think that class is still cheaper w/ the H-E-F. You can't find that fare on Kayak, Expedia etc. I used to fly them all the time. In fact, I haven't paid for a ticket since discovering FT and I only fly up front now. wj

I..I used to fly Deluxe-Elite ...

I thought Deluxe was the best value proposition across the Pacific by far. In the nose of the 747 was a great cabin. Could almost always book a seat with no seat in front of you (thanks to the nose shape). I sat in 24D on many of these flights, about $1,400US RT. Great deal.

Exec is not as nearly as good for me. Yes, it is certainly better than coach, but that is all I can say. Better than a UA or DL Y+, but not the old Deluxe. Exec is bland, while Deluxe had class.

May it's soul rest in peace.

Kayak does not reflect the discount fares available on the EVA website. I fly premium laurel, and the price available at EVA is almost always cheaper than on any of the fare engines. Always check the EVA website.

What I meant was to compare other airlines on Kayak to the Eva H-E-F. wj
