Connecting through IST.

Per the fare rule:

PERMITTED 01APR THROUGH 15MAY OR 21AUG THROUGH 31MAR ON THE OUTBOUND TRANSATLANTIC SECTOR.

Bookable in G Class (ECONOMY, not Comfort). 100% on UA. None on AC and US.

Stopover may be available for free per fare rule. However, I have difficulties in getting same price (about $34 higher) with stopover.

Similar prices are available at ORD/JFK/IAD as well (but it will not be MR material).

Ohhh man, this looks tempting. I wonder what it's like to fly TK now that I'm matched to TK E/*G ...

You could also do LAX-JFK-IST-HKG for cheaper $1106 4.4 cpm with LAX-JFK on AA, DL, or UA, depends on the airline you wanna credit miles to. I saw this on ITA few dates in Nov and more in early Dec. Can't pull on Big O yet but I think I need to put in multi-cities in order to have it shows.

Use ITA to guide you.

I have just done a dummy booking on TK's website for 11/16-11/19 (6:35 layover at HKG on 11/18) and it prices out $1150 ai.

For those of you who want to get away for the real "Turkey" and Black Friday, same-day from 11/23 is also available. (Don't ask me if they will serve turkey as the meal...:D:D:D)

Good find; I've also done a dummy booking 11/23-11/27 (to match up with my need to be in lax for business on 11/28) for $1166. I'll spend a day in hkg because I like it. Need to sort out some other plans before I pull the trigger.

Question -- how do I get my United MP # into the TK system? It wouldn't let me override the TK mileage program number.

Also -- any visa requirement for the 7-hr layovers in IST?

If you have a US passport, you can get the visa on arrival - it is pretty much just a tax. No issues - pay $20 with a credit card. 7 hours is plenty of time to spin into IST!

At a later date, after booking, I called the airlines and had them add the mp number. You can catch the metro line from the airport to the center of instanbul, it takes about 75 minutes, easy to navigate with one train change, well marked.

If you leave the airport, on your return you can speed through immigration, by entering the TK lounge through the *gold entrance, (streetside). They have a dedicated immigration staff. The TK lounge is one of the nicest in the world, almost brand new.

wow. awesome find. this is really tempting.
some questions for folks on this thread:
1. how did you see the number of miles for each segment? the TK website doesn't seem to provide that.
2. how did you see the actual fare class? i get a bit nervous if i can't see the fare class (got burned earlier this year for taking an LH flight and got zilch)
3. does anyone know why there is a $25 ticketing charge? i saw that when i did a dummy booking.

Thanks!

I had the same issue TK did not change mine to united MP and I am stuck with non usable 8000 points I wrote 3 letters and called them 10 times but they would not change the program so the best bet is make another reservation without logging in on TK or providing you number and book the ticket and while booking put united number in it

TK also has other low fares out of LAX when I tested for November to KIX for around $1,280 and IST for $780 all in (was checking around 1 am so amounts may be off a few $).

I was also getting a $25 ticketing charge when I was booking last week, but when I entered my TK # during the booking process it disappeared.

ITA

Both ITA and Vayama show it is booked in G.

3. does anyone know why there is a $25 ticketing charge? i saw that when i did a dummy booking.

Quite honest - I don't know. But booking at Vayama should resolve the issue.

In addition to garykung's answers,
1. I use great circle mapper (gcmap.com) when I'm checking out mileages for various routings. May not be exactly correct, but it's a quick way to see how things will change, especially when you're looking at multi-segment trips.
2. If you do a dummy booking on the TK website, just before you get to the "pay now" page you'll see a summary of the itinerary with the booking classes shown. Very reassuring -- I've also been burned by classes changing when not booked directly on the carrier's website (e.g. LH flights booked on ua.com).

I can get these fares on ITA but using the same dates and routes on TK and Vayama brings up a mucher higher fare, I wonder if it's done/gone?

G fare on Aeroplan only gives 70% miles, still works out to a lot of miles, for one trip,

Whoops! G fares do not even appear on the list of fares for AE miles, so I guess its big fat ZERO AP miles for this fare.

That's why I wonder why you said you still earn 70%.

When I posted this, I have consulted with the chart and specified that None on AC and US.

I just booked a trip in May for $1,200 LAX-HKG and then a stop for a couple days in IST on the return. All in G. Hopefully, United will not change their elite mile charts before then!

Per fare rule, no stopover is permitted if you have anything from UA.

as long as your ticket allow changes, i wont hold any change fees, missing taxes and etc if you change your ticket in IST. i certainly did not get charged transit fee + taxes.
