Any suggested places for tennis racket restringing? The Central Park courts has a shop that does it but they tend to be pricey and take forever (over a week last time!). I tend to break a lot of strings, unfortunately.

A friend swears by the place in Grand Central. Another friend likes the shop that's just outside Grand Central. On 45th, I think. Maybe 44th. But just off Vanderbilt.

What about Paragon Sports?

Great ideas! I will look into them.

Any thoughts on more uptown locations?

Paragon is the place to go. You can kill two birds with one stone:

Flatiron Lounge and Raines are both a stone's throw away.

If you play regularly, you should learn to string it yourself or have a spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend who can do it for you. Again, if you play regularly.

How much does a stringing machine run? I once worked with a guy who had one and he taught me how to do it - it is really pretty easy to do it yourself if you've got the machine.

Anything decent is over a grand. Used to have a used one but it broke. Also there is the problem of where to keep it in a Manhattan apartment. ;)

My husband got his a while ago. I'll see if he remembers the cost. Pricing depends on the type of machine you prefer and what you want to pay for one.

I just went to google shopping and found this sampling:

My husband bought his stringer in the late 90s. He said he paid somewhere between $150-$200.

Even accounting for inflation, that seems like a big range!

The industrial strength ones can be $2-3k.

Ahh. That'd be for doing multiple racquets per day, presumably. Maybe one of the cheap ones would be sufficient for you? Of course, it does not solve the Manhattan-apartment space limitation ;)

As some have questioned the "OT" tag for certain threads in the NYC forum that are mostly of interest to locals, I've changed it here and elsewhere to the more apropos "Local".

I've used the cheap ones before... let's put it this way, there is a reason they are cheap. :)

Maybe Analise's husband will do the restringing for you?

Grand Central Racquet has always done a nice job for me. I was always unimpressed by Paragon. Made the switch years ago and never looked back.
