Hi Everyone,
I have gone through the forums, but I cannot find an answer to my question:

I'm booked on a SYD-MEL-SYD flight on the 1st of September, returning on the 2nd. When going through the seat selection, I am able to choose the exit row seats and there is no information about the extra charges involved.
When are you normally charged for the exit row seat?
Also I am PS.
Thanks for all your help.

Exit seats for domestic Qantas flights (if selectable - depends upon fare/status) are free of charge.

Thanks for your help serfty. I tried this on previous flights and was charged the $40 fee per seat. Did not happen this time and hopefully I will not be charged for the exit row seat.

Exit row seats on the 737 will never be charged for as there has to be passengers seated in each row. That's why on international sectors on the 737 you cannot purchase an exit row seat.

Thats interesting policy about seating (not the no charge part). Some other carriers appear to have deliberately kept the exit rows in 737s and 320s empty while the rows around them are full.

That is certainly different from my experience. From what I recall of all recent Qantas transtasman services I have flown on 737s exit row seats are charged for.
I found a web page on Qantas.com which has a price of AU$40 for short haul seats they give an example as between Australia and New Zealand or New Caledonia. Those flights would be all 737s.

Of course they may move people into those seats for free if no one is prepared to pay for them.

Initially QF did not charge for exit seat on International 737 operations but this changed with little fanfare a year or so later.

This is a CASA policy. There must be 2 passengers per exit row (so a minimum of 8).

For some bizarre reason should there not be 8 able bodied passengers, the policy goes as far to say which seats should be occupied first in the exit rows.

That may have applied for when the A330-200 operated across the tasman before it was removed from service in May.

At the bottom of the link you provided it also says this
"* There is a limited selection of Exit Row Seats available on domestic flights at no charge. Exit Row Seats are not available on international flights operated by Boeing 737-400 or 737-800 aircraft. "
